The American Educational Research Association's (AERA) Division G, Social Contexts of Education, recently honored Kris Gutiérrez, professor of Educational Psychology and Learning Sciences and of Literacy Studies, with a Lifetime Achievement Award as well as the Henry T. Trueba Award for Research Leading to the Transformation of the Social Contexts of Education for her distinguished contributions to the systematic examination of the role of social contexts in education.
As described by nominator Professor Joanne Larson from the University of Rochester, “Professor Gutiérrez’s extraordinary record of scholarship has influenced the ways we conceptualize, study, and re-present the literacy and learning practices of youth from non-dominant communities. Few scholars have had such far reach across so many domains and communities.” Dean Shepard added that “Professor Gutiérrez is internationally recognized for her several breakthrough contributions to learning theory made at the same time that she has used her exquisite understanding of supportive learning environments to design practical educational interventions that rigorously ensure students’ competence and confidence.”
