Campus Sustainability Assistant

Hiring one position from May 2024 - May 2025

Student Assistant III - IV STARS, the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System measures and encourages sustainability in all aspects of higher education. With more than 800 participants in 30 countries, AASHE’s STARS program is the most widely recognized framework in the world for publicly reporting comprehensive information related to a college and university sustainability performance. Participants report achievements in fie overall areas: academics, engagement, operations, planning and administration, and innovation and leadership. This position will support the administration and data compilation and verification for the 2024 report for the CU Boulder campus. Work directly with campus credit contributors for data analysis and reporting tool entry. Requires excellent written and oral communication skills, research, data management, and organizational and administrative skills. Must be available in Summer 2024 for an estimated 10 hours per week.

Climate Justice Team

Hiring for Spring 2024, to continue into 2024-25 Academic Year

Student Assistant II, $16.85 Coordinate and collaborate to create Climate Justice initiatives and projects on campus and in local communities. Promote sustainability and social justice through communications, service projects, trainings and outreach campaigns. Knowledge of social and environmental justice issues, ability to work collaboratively with a group to create and implement programs, and good presentation and writing skills required. Connections and networks with diverse student groups or desire to create these connections, experience working with volunteer groups, and experience with planning events preferred.

Green Labs Assistant

Hiring for Summer 2024, to begin end of May or first week of June

Student Assistant I - II. Laboratories are energy and resource-intensive spaces. If you want to have impact on energy conservation and other resource savings on campus and be part of work that is influencing efficiency efforts in laboratories nationwide, then this is the job for you. Assistants are needed to help build a culture of efficient science by working on educational campaigns, posters and signage specific to laboratory environments, contests, lab-specific recycling and other items to help run the day to day functions of the program. The program is looking for individuals who are dedicated, hard-working, highly motivated, detail-oriented, resourceful, responsible, good with people, and who work well on their own. Writing skills and/or graphic skills would be a real benefit. Work study preferred, but not required. $16 to start.

Graphics Designer

Hiring one position for Fall 24-25 Academic Year

Student Assistant II - III This position involves creating a variety of digital and print media, including posters, logos, displays, and other design materials for the Environmental Center's programs and initiatives. Must have proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, especially Adobe Illustrator. Students majoring in Creative Technology & Design, Art, Communications, and Marketing are encouraged to apply. For fall 2024, the position requires an expected commitment of 10-15 hours per week, starting with training in late April 2024.

Ralphie's Green Stampede Sports Sustainability and Fan Engagement Assistant

Hiring for 2024-2025 Academic Year

Student Assistant I - II RGS staff interacts with CU Athletics, Buffalo Sports Properties, Buff fans, and the local community. The focus of the program is on the intersection of sports and sustainability, leveraging the power of sport to influence sustainable behavior on game day and beyond. Duties: Assist with the development and implementation of community-based social marketing programs to promote sustainable actions. Help organize and implement ongoing elements of the program such as zero waste practices, game day promotions, event planning, marketing, climate action, social media and communications. Required: A strong interest in sports and sustainability; attention to detail and a passion for planning and promotions; ability to interact with campus partners, fans, and other stakeholders in a supportive and sincere manner; a creative and visionary approach; self-starting students with strong writing, creative marketing and/or social media skills.

Must be able to work at most home football games and some home basketball games. Important Dates: Spring Game Scrimmage- April 27. Fall 2024 Home Football Games- Aug 31, Sept 21, Oct 12, Oct 26, Nov 16, Nov 29.

Zero Waste Outreach Team

Hiring for the 2024-25 Academic Year

Student Assistant I - II. Educate the campus community about all zero waste best practices, including waste reduction, reuse, composting, and recycling. Develop and distribute information, conduct visits to campus offices, and give presentations to students, faculty and staff. This position involves face-to-face interactions with students, faculty, and staff, collaboration with team members and Environmental Center staff, individual projects that require self-direction and strong time management skills. The Zero Waste Outreach Team also supports zero waste events on campus on both an outreach and operational level. Creativity, artistic skills, graphic design, and social media experience are very helpful, but not necessary. 10-20 hours per week, with occasional evening and weekend work required. Team members are required to work at the ROC (Recycling Operations Center) for at least one semester to gain an understanding of our campus' waste system through hands-on experience. Pay starts at $16/hr.

Green Greek Coordinator

Hiring for Spring 2024

Fraternity and Sorority Representatives Student Assistant I - II. Greek Sustainability Coordinators work in a team - join one sitting sorority representative and one fraternity representative. Responsible for recruiting representatives from each Greek House, leading bi-weekly meetings with reps, and spearheading the creation and implementation of effective zero waste and energy/water reduction strategies in Greek houses. Support zero waste audits and energy/water assessments of the Greek houses in coordination with Reps/Chairs, and ECO-Visits team members. A key role of this position is to ensure that sustainability initiatives are integrated into Greek Week each spring. Required skills: knowledge and experience working within the Greek community, strong communication skills, desire to help the Greek community be leaders in sustainability. Preferred skills: self-starter that can lead innovation, and comfortable speaking in front of groups. Availability required is a minimum of 2 hours a week, up to 7 hours. $16/hr to start. Start date flexible - training required before Fall semester classes start, accomodations are made for recruitment.

Green Labs Team Lead Position - JSCBB, SEEC & SEEL

Hiring Spring 2024

Student Assistant III. The CU Green Labs Program is seeking to hire graduate students who are presently in lab departments, specifically JSCBB, SEEC and SEEL, to lead on energy/water efficiency efforts, lab member engagement/outreach, and other lab sustainability efforts within their departments or lab buildings associated with their graduate degrees. The number of hours worked is flexible and is typically between 1 to 10 hours/week. The graduate school has an overload application process to enable graduate students to take on these roles even if they already have a 50% appointment (this requires obtaining departmental and/or PI approval). Please note that other workload limits may apply for international students with visa work restrictions. Preferred qualifications: a passion for sustainability and leadership, experience working in a research laboratory, and good interpersonal skills especially within lab environments.

Internships

The CU Environmental Center offers semester long interships for students interested in the department and sustainability.

Internships are available on a limited basis, depending on the priorities and projects of the current semester, capacity of supervisors and skills and interests of applicants.
Academic credit for an internship must be facilitated and approved by your academic major department.
Students can work with the E-Center as a paid employee, paid intern for a specified term, or intern for academic credit. In order to earn academic credit while in a paid position, the student will need to work with the supervisor and internship advisor to identify desired and approved learning outcomes.

Students

Students are the heart and soul of the Environmental Center, creating a sustainable University of Colorado Boulder campus and making a positive impact on the campus community and beyond. E-Center student-led programs and projects have pioneered sustainable improvements that other universities and communities are emulating.

Inclusivity and Diversity

Social justice initiatives are key components of sustainability. The Environmental Center strives to create programs, activities and an organizational culture that embrace social justice, inclusivity and diversity. Applications are sought from all students including, but not limited to, underrepresented students at CU: students of color, first-generation students, students with disabilities, LGBTQI students, low-income students and non-traditional students. Undergraduate and graduate students who work with the CU Enviornmental Center are engaged in a variety of majors such as (but not limited to) engineering, business, communication, political science, architecture, biology, education and environmental studies.

Academic year openings

Positions for the academic year are filled in August of each year, with few openings at other times. Applications are accepted year round with interviews held at the start of the Fall semester. Students are hired for the full Fall to Spring academic year, with work commitment varying from 5 - 20 hours per week depending on position. All students who are interviewed each August will be asked to hold the date of a required-attendance staff work retreat in September in case they are hired.

Positions sometimes become available during the school year and are posted and filled quickly. Summer positions are usually filled in May. Current Openings are posted on the tab above.

The first time you are hired to work in a campus job, you must show documents that will satisfy the required Form I-9 Employment Verification Eligibility form. Students working away from home for the first time: bring original documents to Boulder with you or arrange their delivery to you to avoid delay of your starting work. More info about required employment documentation can be found on the CU Student Employment Office website, or on the I-9 form. The Environmental Center can only hire current students who are officially registered in a degree-seeking program at the University of Colorado at Boulder (or CU Boulder students in the official Leave of Absence program). For summer positions, student employees do not have to be taking summer classes if enrolled in Spring AND Fall semester classes.
