Recent outreach activities http://www.colorado.edu/ebio/redmond/Miranda_Redmond/Outreach.html  This workshop was primarily focused on how to teach climate change and evolution, and was geared towards middle school and high school science teacher. The workshop was a great success (55 participants total!) thanks to the many graduate student volunteers, scientists, and educators. Checkout our website here for electronic resources, etc. This was a great 4-day trip for lower-income middle school students to explore the outdoors and learn about the fascinating geology and ecology of Canyonlands National Park in Utah. As Summit middle school students were in the process of designing and executing their own scientific research projects to present at the science fair in 2 months, myself and 5 other graduate students volunteered to assist in a mock poster session. Rather than having the students show us their posters, we made posters on our research for the students to judge. This was a fun experience and one that I think was really valuable for the students. The students were both able to learn about exciting research that was being done in Boulder and also learn how the “real” scientists present their research findings. My favorite question from one of the judges: “Where did you buy that piece of equipment, and how large is it?”, said in a very serious tone about a photo that included a tree caliper. It turns out he had been looking for a similar piece of equipment to measure different dimensions of peoples faces for his own science fair project! Luckily, I was able to lend him mine for the month.
