Japan Center for Michigan Universities (Shiga, Japan)

The Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) invites applications for the position of full-time lecturer of Japanese language. Period of appointment: Full-time (40-hour average work week), for twelve months (September 2009 to August 2010), with the possibility of renewal.

Qualifications: Master's degree or higher, preferably in Japanese language pedagogy, applied linguistics, or a related field in education or Japanese studies. Native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in teaching all levels of Japanese at the college-level in the United States. Japan Center for Michigan Universities: Summer 2009 Positions

The Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) invites applications for the positions of instructor during the 2009 summer intensive Japanese program. Period of appointment: June 1- August 1, 2009 (tentative).

Qualifications: Master's degree or higher, preferably in Japanese language pedagogy, applied linguistics, or a related field in education or Japanese studies. Native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in teaching all levels of Japanese at the college-level in the United States. Responsibilities include teaching a maximum of 18 hours per week of Japanese-language courses (Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced). Other responsibilities include student advising and service to the Center.

Compensation: 600,000 yen, depending upon qualifications and experience. JCMU will provide for transportation to the Center in Hikone, Shiga Prefecture.

International Christian University: Faculty Position in Japanese Language

The College of Liberal Arts at International Christian University invites candidates for a full-time instructorship (five-year contractual appointment) to teach Japanese. Start date for appointment is September 1, 2009. ICU is a private, bilingual liberal arts university with an undergraduate College of Liberal Arts and several graduate programs. ICU's educational mission is based on Christian and democratic principles. ICU has 3,000 students from Japan and overseas. The university is located on a wooded campus in the suburbs of Tokyo. The goal of the ICU Japanese Language Programs is to help students from abroad achieve greater competence in comprehending and producing both spoken and written Japanese, particularly in respect to carrying on academic studies in Japan.

Qualifications: (1) Master's degree or above in Japanese language teaching or related field; (2) Japanese teaching experience at the college level; (3) Ability to give lectures in English and Japanese.

New York University: Language Lecturer

The Department of East Asian Studies at New York University invites applications for a full-time non tenure-track appointment as a Japanese Language Lecturer beginning September 1, 2009, pending budgetary and administrative approval. The program is seeking a teacher who has excellent command of both English and Japanese, and who, at a minimum, holds an MA degree. A candidate with a doctoral degree or committed to earning it will be preferred. The Department is particularly interested in individuals who are critically engaged with research and teaching of language in an interdisciplinary program. Applicants should submit 1) letter, 2) CV, 3) teaching philosophy as it applies to courses from the introductory to advanced level, 4) the relationship of language teaching and an area studies program, and 5) sample lesson plan with appropriate supporting material for a 75 minute class meeting. Course load: three classes per semester.

Hamilton College: Language Fellow

Kansai Gaidai University

Kansai Gaidai University is seeking a full-time?rank open?instructor to teach all levels of Japanese Language for English-speaking college students and one undergraduate course for native Japanese students. Responsibilities include 1) teaching Spoken Japanese as well as Reading & Writing Japanese classes on all weekday mornings (up to three hours each day), 2) teaching one undergraduate course related to teaching Japanese as a foreign language (TJFL), 3) supervising TJFL trainee teachers, and 4) providing a few office hours per week.

Qualifications: 1) M.A. or higher in a field related to teaching Japanese or linguistics (required by the end of the 2008-2009 academic year), 2) Ability to teach all levels of college Japanese to English-speaking students, 3) Native fluency in Japanese, 4) Excellent command of English (for advising international students and participating in meetings). Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Swarthmore College: Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures is seeking applications for a two-year Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship position in Japanese language and culture, beginning August 2009. The Mellon fellow is appointed at the assistant professor level, with full salary, and will be responsible for teaching a combination of Japanese language courses and courses in English in the fellow's disciplinary specialty. The teaching load will be two courses in the first year and three courses in the second year. Candidates with expertise in premodern or modern Japanese literature, linguistics and language pedagogy, women's or gender studies, and film and media studies are encouraged to apply. Near-native proficiency in Japanese and English and college-level Japanese language teaching experience are expected. Applicants should have received their Ph.D. within the last five years and must be US citizens or permanent residents. The Yamasa Institute - Summer 2009

The Online Center for Japanese Studies at the Yamasa Institute is seeking Japanese language teachers for its summer program beginning in June 2009. Five part-time lecturers will be hired. Lecturers must be able to work on-site in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, for at least 10 weeks. Start date and duration are negotiable. Salary will be based on the OCJS salary scale. Commuting expenses will be covered and, if necessary, apartment accommodation is also available. Candidates must possess a B.A. in Japanese language pedagogy or equivalent, native competency in Japanese, and at least two years of teaching experience in Japan or overseas. Duties include teaching first- to third-year Japanese language skill courses, student advising, and curriculum development. Familiarity with the use of technology in language teaching are desirable.

Hokkaido International Foundation (HIF): Summer Japanese Language and Japanese Culture Program

Hokkaido International Foundation is recruiting two Japanese language instructors for the summer of 2009. HIF requires highly qualified, proactive instructors who can thrive in intensive teaching and learning environments. If you are interested in teaching for eight weeks during summer at the Japanese Language and Japanese Culture Program, please send the required documents listed below to the address at the end of this announcement.

The 2009 program contract runs between June 10 and August 8, 2009. This includes the preparatory and final meetings. If you wish to apply for the 2009 HIF program, please send relevant documents to the HIF by January 31, 2009 (postmarked) to HIF.

Minimum requirements: MA in Japanese pedagogy or related field; Japanese proficiency at native speaker or near-native level; two or more years of experience teaching at a university or tertiary institution.

Working conditions: Salary is based on the HIF summer program salary scale. Accommodation is provided near HIF headquarters except where applicants are presently located in Hakodate city or its environs. Round-trip travel expenses (airfare/JR) between Hakodate and instructor's residence will be reimbursed to the amount of 160,000 yen for overseas residents and actual transportation costs for domestic residents.

Kent State University

The Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies at Kent State University seeks a candidate for a full-time, non-tenure-track position teaching courses in Japanese in support of a Japanese Language Minor. Courses include Advanced Japanese, Business Japanese, and Japanese Culture. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to apply current best practices in foreign language instruction in the Japanese classroom. Familiarity with the use of educational technology is desirable. The successful candidate will also be responsible for coordinating the Japanese minor, supervising part-time faculty teaching lower-level Japanese courses, and helping the department develop the Japanese curriculum. Candidate must possess native or near-native fluency in Japanese. Masters degree is required by starting date of August 20, 2009. Columbia University

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University invites applicants for the position of Lecturer in Discipline in Japanese language, beginning in the Fall of 2009. The Yamasa Institute - Summer 2009

The Online Center for Japanese Studies at the Yamasa Institute is seeking Japanese language teachers for its summer program beginning in June 2009. Five part-time lecturers will be hired. Lecturers must be able to work on-site in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, for at least 10 weeks. Start date and duration are negotiable. Salary will be based on the OCJS salary scale. Commuting expenses will be covered and, if necessary, apartment accommodation is also available.     Beloit College: Summer Teaching Positions

Senior instructors and graduate teaching assistants are needed for Beloit College's summer intensive Japanese language program (June 10 - August 7, 2009). In 2009, we expect to offer first- through fourth-year Japanese. Each level, with enrollments of ten students, has one instructor and one graduate teaching assistant.  Instructors collaborate with each other, the language coordinator, and the CLS director on curriculum, syllabi, and instruction. Duties include classroom teaching and evaluation, and assistance with organizing cultural activities for the program. Instructors will be expected to live on campus (single occupancy), share lunch and dinner with the students in the dining commons, and be available to students evenings and weekends.

Minimum qualifications for senior instructors include an M.A., teaching experience preferably in an immersion environment, native or near-native proficiency in Japanese, and advanced proficiency in English. An advanced degree in Japanese, applied linguistics, or foreign language education is desirable. For graduate teaching assistants, an M.A. in progress is required. Salary is competitive, and includes room and board. The Asian Studies Program of the University of the South (Sewanee) invites applications for an Assistant Professor or Lecturer position in Japanese Language and Literature, beginning August 2009. Arizona State University

The School of International Letters and Cultures at Arizona State University seeks to appoint a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Japanese, with an emphasis on pre-modern Japanese language and literature, starting August 2009. Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in Japanese literature or closely related discipline by the time of appointment; possess native or near-native proficiency in Japanese and English; and demonstrate ability to teach modern and pre-modern Japanese language and literature to university students. Preferred qualifications include a demonstrated ability to work constructively with colleagues in expanding undergraduate and graduate programs. The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a tenure-track position of assistant professor for its Japanese literature and culture program. The appointment will begin on August 30, 2009, pending budgetary approval. Preference will be given to a specialist in pre-modern Japanese literature, with interdisciplinary or cross-cultural interests in such areas as performing or visual arts and theater. The Department of East Asian Studies in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta invites applications for a full-time Faculty Lecturer position in Japanese language teaching. This is a renewable five-year, twelve months per year academic appointment. Applicants for this position should have a PhD or equivalent degree (or be close to completion) in Japanese language pedagogy, Japanese linguistics, second language acquisition, or related fields, and proficiency in Japanese and English. The successful candidate will have substantial relevant teaching experience and present clear evidence of superior teaching ability. Experience in program coordination and computer-assisted instruction will be assets. Faculty Lecturers will teach eight half course equivalents (HCE) per year and assume normal administrative duties associated with teaching. There is no research expectation associated with this position, although Faculty Lecturers are expected to remain current with the relevant literature in their fields as it applies to their teaching assignments.

University of Colorado at Boulder: East Asian Studies Reference/Instruction Librarian

The East Asian Studies Reference/Instruction Librarian is a tenure-stream faculty position reporting to the Faculty Director for Reference and Instructional Services. Duties include general and specialized reference in the social sciences and humanities with responsibilities associated with an information commons; virtual reference and instruction services; classroom teaching as part of an active library instruction program; selecting library materials in the areas of East Asian Languages, primarily Japanese and other Asian languages taught at the University of Colorado (Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Chinese, Farsi, Hindi, Korean); and guiding collection management decisions related to the vernacular and East Asian languages collections. This position serves as the primary liaison to the East Asian Languages and Civilizations Department and the Center for Asian Studies and assumes primary responsibility for the development and delivery of reference and instructional services for students and faculty in these units. The East Asian Studies Librarian supports the integration of new technologies into the Reference and Instructional Services Department and actively participates in departmental policy planning and delivery of services.

The Reference and Instructional Services Department provides virtual and in-depth personal reference and instructional services to the students and faculty of the University of Colorado at Boulder and specializes in services and collections for the social sciences and humanities. Significant parts of the responsibilities of this position are research and creative work and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University of Colorado at Boulder.
