Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium

The draft standards for the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) for foreign languages was published in Fall, 2002. It was done by a committee of practicing teachers and teacher educators with expertise in a variety of languages who came together from across the country to craft standards that articulate what all beginning teachers should know and be able to do to effectively teach a student a foreign language. Ms. Lynn Sessler-Schmaling (Menasha Joint School District, Wisconsin) was on the standards committee. It is very well-written and is a very useful document for anyone who is involved in teacher training.

The draft will be reviewed by the field till spring 2004. SIG members are encouraged to read the draft and send their comments to INTASC by completing the survey and mailing it to the address listed on the survey. The draft is available on the INTASC web.
