University of Alberta

The Department of East Asian Studies in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta invites applications for a full-time Faculty Lecturer position in Japanese language teaching. This is a renewable five-year, twelve months per year academic appointment. Applicants for this position should have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree (or be close to completion) in Japanese language pedagogy, Japanese linguistics, second language acquisition, or related fields, and proficiency in Japanese and English. The successful candidate will have substantial relevant teaching experience and present clear evidence of superior teaching ability. Experience in program coordination and computer-assisted instruction will be assets. Faculty Lecturers will teach eight half course equivalents (HCE) per year and assume normal administrative duties associated with teaching. There is no research expectation associated with this position, although Faculty Lecturers are expected to remain current with the relevant literature in their fields as it applies to their teaching assignments.

Courses on East Asia have been offered regularly at the University of Alberta since 1961, making our program one of the oldest in Western Canada. Originally founded in 1979, the Department of East Asian Studies has 11 faculty members in Chinese and Japanese studies and is undergoing a significant rebuilding process. Salary for this position is on the Assistant Professor scale, which begins at $64,087 per annum (2008-09 scale), and the position includes a full range of benefits. American University

American University's Department of Language and Foreign Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Japanese, beginning in the fall 2008 semester. This is a one-year temporary appointment with the possibility of renewal. Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in the field, native or near-native fluency, experience in teaching all levels of Japanese, and evidence of excellence in the classroom. Responsibilities include teaching 18 credit hours of Japanese-language courses (elementary, intermediate, advanced) per academic year (fall and spring semesters), student advising, and service to the department. University of Arkansas

The Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Arkansas is accepting applications for the position of Full-Time Lecturer in Japanese. Formal appointment (to begin August 18, 2008) is contingent on budget approval. The Lecturer will teach four classes per semester of Japanese language courses at all levels (elementary to advanced), with the possibility of additional teaching appointments in summer. The Lecturer is also expected to assist in curriculum development in the basic language component of the Japanese Program. Requirements are a master's degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, curriculum and instruction, or a related field (must be in hand at the time of appointment), native or near-native proficiency in both Japanese and English, experience in teaching to English-speaking students, and a vibrant and outgoing teaching style. A good team player is strongly desired. Candidates with computer skills will be considered favorably. Binghamton University

The Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at Binghamton University (State University of New York) invites applications for a tenure-track position in premodern Japanese literature at the assistant professor level, beginning September 2009. Applicants should have a Ph.D. or expect to have the degree in hand by the beginning of the appointment. Primary teaching responsibilities are courses in premodern Japanese literature and culture. We are especially eager to receive applications from those working in the area of traditional performing arts. Priority will be given to applicants who can teach Japanese language. Denison University

The Department of Modern Languages at Denison University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective Fall 2009. Ph.D. or ABD in Chinese or Japanese language and/ or culture required, with the ability to teach both languages. Commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level. LaGrange College

LaGrange College, a 1,000 student, United Methodist-affiliated liberal arts college located 70 miles southwest of Atlanta, Georgia, invites applications for a part-time adjunct in Japanese Language. Duties will include teaching one section of Japanese 1101 in the fall and one section of Japanese 1102 in the spring, and also tutoring some students in second-year Japanese. LaGrange College offers a student exchange program with Seigakuin University in Japan. Oita University, (Kyushu) Japan

The Centre for International Education and Research at Oita University, Japan, invites applications for an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor in Japanese language and Japanese studies. This is a tenured appointment starting from April 1, 2009. The successful candidate is expected to 1) teach the Japanese language, through the medium of English, to students from overseas, and, in addition, Japanese studies topics in English, 2) provide pre-training (such as English courses) to Japanese students who wish to study abroad, 3) provide Japanese students intending to study abroad and overseas students studying in Oita with lifestyle guidance and academic supervision, 4) negotiate and liaise with tertiary educational institutions overseas to promote international student/staff exchanges, and 5) be actively engaged in all activities of the Center for International Education and Research. The successful candidate must also hold at minimum a master's degree, be able to give lectures in English, have taught the Japanese language as well as Japanese studies at the tertiary level, have lived outside Japan for an appreciable period of time, have at least three publications (excluding degree theses) published in academic journals or in publications of similar standing, and be able to live in the City of Oita or in its vicinity after being engaged. University of Pittsburgh

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures of the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a tenure-track position of assistant professor for its Japanese literature and culture program. The appointment will begin on August 30, 2009, pending budgetary approval. Preference will be given to a specialist in pre-modern Japanese literature, with interdisciplinary or cross-cultural interests in such areas as performing or visual arts and theater. Responsibilities will include teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels, mentoring students, and working with other Asia specialists on campus. The applicant should have a Ph.D. in hand or expected by the end of the summer, 2009.

The University of Pittsburgh is one of fifteen Title VI National Resource Centers in East Asian Studies in the United States and has dedicated substantial resources to international studies. The East Asian Library is one of the largest in the nation, and there are excellent research facilities and funds for research and teaching. University of Wisconsin Oshkosh

Tenure-track assistant professor of Japanese, beginning September 1, 2009. Ph.D. in Japanese or related field required. Teach Japanese in a distance-learning environment (primarily using interactive 2-way videoconferencing). Area of specialization open. Seeking individual with native or near-native fluency in both Japanese and English and evidence of teaching excellence at all levels of Japanese at the undergraduate level. Administrative skills in coordinating the Japanese program as well as a variety of study abroad programs with Japan will be beneficial.
