Amherst College/Five College Consortium

The Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations at Amherst College invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Japanese beginning July 1, 2008. Based at Amherst College, the position is jointly supported by members of the Five College consortium, whose students are able to take courses at all five campuses. While most teaching will be at Amherst College (individual sessions as well as one advanced course each year), responsibilities include teaching third-year Japanese at Mount Holyoke College. On occasion, responsibilities could include some teaching on another of the consortial campuses. Class assignments may change depending on need from year to year. All five campuses are located within 12 miles of the others and are connected by a fare-free bus system. Qualifications: M.A. degree (or higher) in a field related to language teaching, knowledge of and teaching experience in college-level Japanese language teaching, and native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English. The initial appointment is for three years with a decision for reappointment in the third year. Salary is competitive. Binghamton University

Binghamton University (State University of New York at Binghamton) invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Japanese. Bowdoin College

The Asian Studies Program of Bowdoin College invites applications for a full-time, one-year visiting lecturer position in Japanese Language beginning Fall 2008. Applicants should have an M.A. in language pedagogy, applied linguistics, or related areas in Japanese studies. We are seeking a native speaker of Japanese with fluency in English as well as excellent teaching experience at the college level. Experience in directing a language program, though not necessary, is welcome. Primary responsibilities include teaching one elementary level course and one advanced level course independently each semester. Candidates will also be expected to participate in the weekly Japanese language table and support the language program by assisting with film viewings, cultural activities, and the preparation of supplementary materials. Coastal Carolina University

The Department of Foreign Languages at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for an appointment at the rank of Lecturer in Japanese beginning August 2008. The selected applicant will teach five sections of language and/or literature and culture courses per semester. This is a one-year, renewable position with benefits. M.A. in Japanese required. Preference will be given to candidates with college-level teaching experience, familiarity with assessment and technology, and program-building and curriculum development experience. Full-time temporary Lecturer/Language Lab Director starting September 2008. California State University, Long Beach

The Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at California State University, Long Beach announces a full-time Lecturer position in Japanese Language. This is a one-year renewable position, effective August 25, 2008. Minimum qualifications: Ph.D. or Ed.D. at the time of appointment and potential for effective teaching and scholarship. Candidates must have native or near-native language competency in Japanese, as well as substantial knowledge and appreciation of Japanese culture. University of Colorado at Boulder

The East Asian Studies Reference/Instruction Librarian at the University of Colorado at Boulder is a tenure-stream faculty position reporting to the Faculty Director for Reference and Instructional Services. Duties include general and specialized reference in the social sciences and humanities with responsibilities associated with an information commons; virtual reference and instruction services, classroom teaching as part of an active library instruction program, selecting library materials in the areas of East Asian Languages, primarily Japanese and other Asian languages taught at the University of Colorado (Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Chinese, Farsi, Hindi, Korean), and guiding collection management decisions related to the vernacular and East Asian languages collections. This position serves as the primary liaison to the East Asian Languages and Civilizations Department and the Center for Asian Studies and assumes primary responsibility for the development and delivery of reference and instructional services for students and faculty in these units. The East Asian Studies Librarian supports the integration of new technologies into the Reference and Instructional Services Department and actively participates in departmental policy planning and delivery of services.

The Reference and Instructional Services Department provides virtual and in-depth personal reference and instructional services to the students and faculty of the University of Colorado at Boulder and specializes in services and collections for the social sciences and humanities. Significant parts of the responsibilities of this position are research and creative work and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Requirements: Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited institution, superior Japanese language skills as well as excellent spoken and written English, two years' professional experience in an academic library including, but not limited to, reference and instruction, collection development, familiarity and/or experience with virtual reference and learning management software, or Asian-language cataloging, academic background in Japanese studies, and demonstrated potential for research, scholarly, and/ or professional achievement at a national level. The successful candidate will be appointed as a full-time (12 month), tenure-stream faculty member. Depending upon professional experience and demonstrated accomplishments in scholarly activity, creative work, and service, appointment may be at the assistant professor level or above. Starting salary range will be $50,000-$56,500. Benefits include 22 working days vacation, 10 paid holidays, liberal sick leave, University group health care plan, group life insurance, TIAA/CREF retirement/annuity, and support for scholarly/professional activities. Tenured librarians are eligible for sabbatical leave.

The Department of Asian Studies at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, announces a one-year visiting assistant professor or lecturer position in Japanese language and culture, beginning in September, 2008. The successful candidate should be a near-native speaker of both English and Japanese, have experience in teaching Japanese language courses, and be prepared to teach language courses at all levels. A Ph.D. is preferred. In addition to Japanese language teaching, candidates should be able to teach a course on some aspect of Japanese language or culture in English. The candidate must be committed to supporting the Japanese and Asian Studies programs by assisting with activities outside the classroom, such as the weekly Japanese Language Table, tutoring, and recruitment and orientation for study abroad programs. Familiarity with the use of technology for teaching is also desirable. The St. Olaf Asian Studies curriculum includes courses in Chinese language and literature, Chinese film, Japanese language and literature, Japanese film, Chinese economics, Chinese and Japanese history, Chinese and Japanese religions, and a special sequence of general education courses that link language and area studies called the Asian Conversations. University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

The Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee invites applications for ad hoc lecturer positions in Japanese language for the 2008-09 academic year. Responsibilities include teaching 11-12 class hours (50 minutes) plus office hours, course coordination and TA supervision. Minimum qualifications: M.A. in Japanese language pedagogy, linguistics, TESOL, or related fields, and teaching experience at the college level for a minimum of two years. The successful candidate must have native or near-native proficiency in Japanese and English and be able to teach all levels of Japanese language courses. Experience designing and teaching intermediate level courses and familiarity with the use of technology in language teaching are highly desirable. Washington and Lee University

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Washington and Lee University invites applications for a one-year replacement position, with the possibility of renewal for two additional years, for an Assistant Professor (Ph.D.) or Instructor (ABD) in Japanese language and literature. Responsibility includes teaching six courses over a three-term period.
