Beloit College

Senior instructors and graduate teaching assistants are needed for Beloit College's summer intensive Japanese program (June 11-August 8, 2008). We expect to offer first- through fourth-year Japanese. Each level, with enrollments ranging from five to ten students, has one instructor and one graduate teaching assistant. Instructors collaborate with each other, the language coordinator, and the Center for Language Studies director on curriculum, syllabi, and instruction. Duties include classroom teaching and evaluation and assistance with organizing cultural activities for the program. Instructors will be expected to live on campus (single occupancy), share lunch and dinner with the students in the dining commons, and be available for students evenings and weekends. Minimum qualifications for senior instructors include an M.A., teaching experience, preferably in an immersion environment, native or near-native proficiency in Japanese, and advanced proficiency in English. An advanced degree in Japanese, applied linguistics, or foreign language education is desirable. (For graduate teaching assistants, an M.A. in progress is required.) Salary is competitive and includes room and board. Bowdoin College

The Asian Studies Program of Bowdoin College invites applications for a one-year, half-time lecturer position in Japanese language beginning fall 2008. Possibility of renewal of this position for an additional two years will be decided spring 2009. Applicants should have an M.A. in language pedagogy, applied linguistics, or related areas in Japanese studies. We are seeking a native speaker of Japanese with fluency in English as well as excellent teaching experience at the college level. Primary responsibilities include teaching one course individually and team-teaching drill sessions of an elementary-level course each semester with members of the Bowdoin College faculty. Other responsibilities include participating in the weekly Japanese language tables and supporting the language program by meeting with students individually, preparing supplementary materials, and correcting homework and quizzes. Bucknell University

The Bucknell University Department of East Asian Studies invites applications for a one-year, entry-level replacement position as a Visiting Assistant Professor in Japanese language for the 2008-09 academic year. Ordinary responsibilities require the teaching of three levels of Japanese each semester. The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC) at the University of California, Davis, invites applications for the full-time position of Lecturer of Japanese beginning July 1, 2008. This is a one-year renewable appointment. Primary duties are modern Japanese language courses at various levels as assigned. The regular teaching load for the three-quarter academic year is seven courses. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Cornell University

The Department of Asian Studies at Cornell University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer position in Japanese language beginning July 1, 2008. One-year probationary contract with three-year renewable contract to follow contingent upon merit and the continued availability of program funding. Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's degree and native-speaker-level competency in Japanese is required, as is prior college-level teaching experience and ability to teach all levels of Japanese. Also required is an explicit understanding of the linguistic properties of Japanese, knowledge of the cultural background necessary to teach the language, familiarity with language-teaching methodologies, including technology-related pedagogy and flexibility in learning and using different teaching methodologies, and the ability to work both in a team and autonomously at all levels of the language. Eastern Michigan University

Eastern Michigan University's Department of Foreign Languages and Bilingual Studies seeks a Department Head, beginning as early as July 1, 2008. The department, with 20 full-time faculty members, offers a variety of programs in Classics, ESL, French, German, Japanese, Language and International Trade, Spanish, and TESOL. The faculty is noted for excellent teaching, research, and outreach activities within the southeastern Michigan community. Georgia State University

Georgia State University announces an anticipated full-time Japanese Lecturer position, with the possibility of Senior Lecturer Status after six years. Harvard University

The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University invites applications for a full-time position as a drill instructor in Japanese beginning September 1, 2008, and ending June 30, 2009. Drill instructors assist course heads in Japanese language classes, assist in preparation of teaching materials, and teach individual drill sections. They hold the title of Teaching Assistant. Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies

The Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies (KCJS) invites applications for two positions in Japanese language:

1) Language Program Director to begin in the fall of 2008. The position will be renewable contingent upon performance. KCJS is a consortium of 14 American universities that sponsors a rigorous, two-semester academic program for undergraduates who wish to do advanced work in Japanese language and cultural studies. www.kcjs.columbia.edu. Lawrence University

University of Montana

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures at the University of Montana invites applications for a two-year, non-renewable position in Japanese language and literature, beginning Fall 2008. Applicants with an ABD/Ph.D. are preferred, but M.A.s in the field with prior tertiary JSL teaching experience will also be considered. Candidates must also exhibit native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English and have documentation of excellence in teaching. A specialization in JSL pedagogy or applied linguistics is most desirable; otherwise a specialty in a field of Japanese literature or culture (with strong language-teaching skills and interests) is also satisfactory. San José State University

The Department of Foreign Language at San José State University invites application for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Japanese Literature. Williams College invites applications for a Japanese Language Fellow (intern) for the 2008-09 academic year. Yale University

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale University seeks a Director of East Asian Languages Instruction at the rank of Senior Lector. The position involves coordinating the modern Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language offerings as well as teaching half time. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (e.g., linguistics, applied linguistics, literature), advanced proficiency in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, and experience in administering a language program. Familiarity with technology and the ability to teach a methods course are desirable. Duties will include assisting in curricula development, language teacher evaluation and training, liaison with other units at the University, such as the Center for Language Study, and outreach to the community.
