Bridgewater State College The Department of Foreign Languages and the Asian Studies Program at Bridgewater State College announce the search for a tenure-track position in Japanese language, literature, and culture beginning Fall 2008 (Position #0655). University of California, Santa Cruz The Language Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz, invites applications from candidates with innovative approaches to language study. Carthage College Carthage College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Japanese. Responsibilities include teaching intermediate and advanced Japanese language and culture, supervising visiting Japanese Target Language Experts' teaching of elementary Japanese, and teaching courses in English outside the department, as well as service to the department and the College. Colgate University The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Colgate University invites applications for a tenure-stream position at the assistant professor level in Japanese language and literature, a position that begins Fall 2008. Applicants should be prepared to teach language at any level as well as Japanese literature in translation, contribute to Colgate's interdisciplinary Liberal Arts Core Curriculum and First-year Seminar program, and offer courses cross-listed with programs such as Asian Studies and Film and Media Studies. Connecticut College The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Connecticut College seeks a tenure-track assistant professor of East Asian studies, with an emphasis on Japan, to begin July 2008. The search is open to any discipline in the humanities, such as comparative literature, cultural studies, media studies, visual culture, gender studies, and religion. The successful candidate will be expected to offer an introductory East Asian studies course as well as other core courses in the major and to play an active role in raising the profile of East Asian studies on campus. He/she will ideally have proficiency in Japanese and the ability to contribute to the Japanese language program if necessary. The normal teaching load is five courses annually, and faculty members are expected to contribute to the College's general education program, which includes a first-year seminar component. Cornell University Cornell University has an opening for a teacher in the Japanese language program for Spring 2008. Williams College Williams College invites applications for a Japanese Language Fellow (intern) for the 2008-09 academic year. Yale University The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale University seeks a Director of East Asian Languages Instruction at the rank of Senior Lector. The position involves coordinating the modern Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language offerings as well as teaching half time. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (e.g., linguistics, applied linguistics, literature), advanced proficiency in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, and experience in administering a language program. Familiarity with technology and the ability to teach a methods course are desirable. Other Positions International Christian University 2008 International Christian University, Tokyo, is seeking Japanese language teachers for its summer program that takes place from Thursday, July 4 to Saturday, August 16, 2008. Approximately 20 part-time lecturers will be hired. Salary will be based on the Summer Courses in Japanese salary scale. Commuting expenses (the cost of a commuter pass) for the duration will be covered. Lecturers with an exceptionally difficult commute may be accommodated in on-campus guest housing (for a rental fee; 2-3 places available).
