University of Arkansas

The Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Arkansas is accepting applications for the position of Full-Time Lecturer in Japanese. Formal appointment, to begin August 15, 2007, is contingent on budget approval. Duties: To teach four classes per semester of Japanese language courses at all levels (elementary to advanced), with the possibility of additional teaching appointments in summer. The Lecturer is also expected to assist in curriculum development in the basic language component of the Japanese Program (more information: www.uark.edu/misc/japanlg/). Qualifications: Master's degree (must be in hand at the time of appointment) in linguistics, applied linguistics, curriculum and instruction, or a related field; native or near-native proficiency in both Japanese and English; experience in teaching to English-speaking students; and a vibrant and outgoing teaching style. Binghamton University

Binghamton University (State University of New York at Binghamton) invites applications for a full-time Lecturer in Japanese, beginning August 2007. Duties include teaching elementary to advanced-level Japanese language courses, participation in curriculum development, and supervising adjunct instructors. Teaching load: 3 courses per semester, total of 6 courses per academic year. Bowdoin College

he Asian Studies Program at Bowdoin College invites applications for the position of Japanese Language Fellow for the 2007-08 academic year. Applicants should have an M.A. in linguistics, Japanese language pedagogy, or related fields as well as teaching experience at the college level. Responsibilities include team-teaching elementary and intermediate language classes in cooperation with other faculty members, grading homework and quizzes, and other work in support of the Japanese language program. The fellow will receive a stipend of $14,000, housing, and health insurance. Carthage College

Carthage College, a small liberal arts college on the shores of Lake Michigan in Kenosha, Wisconsin, is looking for a half-time Japanese language supervisor and teacher to teach two classes of advanced Japanese and to supervise two Japanese assistant teachers who teach first- and second-year Japanese courses. Denison University

Denison University seeks to fill a one-year visiting position in Japanese, beginning in the fall of 2007. Ph.D. preferred, ABD considered. Field open. The successful candidate will have native or near-native command of Japanese, scholarly potential, and a strong record of language instruction using communicative approaches. The University of Denver will hire a Lecturer of Japanese, non-tenure track, beginning September 2007. Area of specialization open within Japanese literature and/or cultural studies. Candidates should have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching at the University level. The successful applicant must be able to teach at all levels in the undergraduate curriculum. Course load is six courses on a quarter system. Teaching courses conducted in English in the University's humanities curriculum may be a part of the course load. It is expected that the successful candidate for this position would further strengthen the existing Japanese minor program at DU. Ph.D. preferred in Japanese literatures and/or cultural studies. Experience teaching all language levels including a culture and civilization class. Native or near-native fluency in Japanese and in English required.

Suffolk University

The Department of Humanities and Modern Languages at Suffolk University in Boston will offer beginning Japanese (101 in the fall and 102 in the spring) for the first time during the 2007-08 academic year. We are presently searching for a lecturer to teach those courses. Since this is a first attempt, we will offer only one section of each course. In the fall, Japanese 101 will meet MWF from 12:00 to 12:50 and F from 1:00 to 1:50. We are looking for an experienced teacher with a green card or U.S. citizenship. Western Michigan University

The Department of Foreign Languages at Western Michigan University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Japanese language, literature, and culture, pending budgetary approval. The position is at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor of Japanese, according to qualifications, and will begin August 2007. Ph.D. in Japanese or evidence of imminent award required. Preferred specialization in pre-modern Japanese literature, culture, and/or language. University of Wisconsin–River Falls

The Modern Language Department of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, located 30 miles from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul in west-central Wisconsin, seeks applications for the position of Japanese language instructor. The position is a part-time academic staff (non-tenure track) position for one year (with possibility of renewal). Duties: to teach Elementary and Intermediate Japanese; to teach in a distance-learning environment (primarily using interactive two-way videoconferencing); to teach an occasional Independent-readings course; to post and keep office hours. Load: 12 credits (three courses) for fall and 8 credits (two courses) for spring. Compensation is commensurate with qualifications. M.A./M.S. in Japanese language or literature is required. Ph.D. in Japanese language or literature may be considered an asset. Teaching experience in area of expertise required. Background in language pedagogy and interest in, or familiarity with, integrating technology in language learning is a plus.
