Colby College

Colby College seeks applicants for a one-year position as Faculty Fellow in East Asian Studies (Japanese), beginning September 1, 2007. The instructor will share in the responsibilities of teaching intermediate and upper-level Japanese language classes. University of Colorado at Boulder

The Bibliographer for Asian Languages and Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder is a temporary (four-year) grant-funded position with the possibility for an extension. This appointment is at the instructor level and reports to the University Libraries faculty director for Collection Development. This position focuses on developing collections in Asian languages for digital and traditional materials using grant funds and other assigned allocations. Additional responsibilities include managing funds and related gifts or grants and providing support for collection management needs. As appropriate, this position will provide instruction and reference services for Asian languages and studies and will participate in special projects. Some travel may be involved. The successful candidate will serve as liaison with the East Asian Languages and Civilizations Department and the Center for Asian Studies. In coordination with the faculty director for Collection Development, this position works collaboratively with the Asian Studies librarian who reports to the Reference and Instructional Services Department.

Requirements: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school and superior language skills in Japanese or Chinese, an ability to work in a collaborative/cooperative environment, and strong interpersonal skills along with effective oral and written communication skills. Preferred qualifications: Working knowledge of additional Asian languages; some experience in collection development, particularly the Asian book and serial trade; a higher degree in Asian Studies or related area; working knowledge of electronic databases, information technology, and/or scholarly communication.

Salary will be $42,000–$50,000, depending on qualifications. Benefits include 22 working days of vacation, ten paid holidays, liberal sick leave, university group health plans, group life insurance, and TIAA/CREF retirement/annuity.

Franklin & Marshall College

Franklin & Marshall College invites applications for a Japanese Language Fellow, beginning Fall 2007. M.A. (or equivalent) and teaching experience are required. Yearly teaching load is 2 lecture courses and 4 drill sections. The successful candidate will assist Franklin & Marshall students in learning to speak and write the Japanese language and in gaining an understanding of Japanese culture through a variety of co-curricular activities. Michigan State University

Michigan State University seeks to fill two full-time positions in Japanese language at the Instructor level beginning August 16, 2007, renewable contingent upon funding and performance. Duties include teaching Japanese language courses, supervising graduate assistants, and participating in program development. Required: at least an M.A. in Japanese pedagogy, linguistics, foreign language teaching, or related field; experience in teaching American college students; training in proficiency approaches; and native or near-native fluency in both Japanese and English. University of Oregon

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Oregon is conducting a search for instructors of Japanese to fill two one-year (academic year) positions with contract renewal contingent upon the quality of performance and available funding. We seek high-quality candidates able to teach Japanese language courses at all levels and to participate in the full range of language program activities. The positions begin September 16, 2007. Wesleyan University

The Department of Asian Languages and Literatures at Wesleyan University invites applications for the position of Foreign Language Teaching Fellow in Japanese language. Applicants must be native speakers of Japanese who are currently pursuing a graduate degree in Japanese Pedagogy, Linguistics, or Second Language Acquisition at a Japanese university, or who have graduated from such a program within the past year. The FLTF will assist the main instructor in teaching beginning and intermediate level Japanese language courses, teach an advanced-level Japanese language course under supervision, and hold office hours, as well as serving as a resource person for cultural programs on Japan. The contract is for one academic year, with possible renewal for a second year. The terms of appointment include $12,000 stipend, a travel allowance, and contributions to basic health care and housing.
