Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan

Applications are now being accepted for Bridging Scholarships, to be awarded for study abroad in Japan beginning in Fall 2007. Please encourage your students to apply.

ATJ administers the Bridging Scholarship program, which will award at least 50 scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan beginning in fall 2007. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Recipients of Bridging Scholarships receive stipends ranging from $2,500 to $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan. The scholarships are funded by donations to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation from U.S. corporations and foundations, including CitiGroup, DeloitteTouche Tohmatsu, Estee Lauder Group of Companies, The Freeman Foundation, Goldman Sachs, Harmon International Industries, Hartford Financial Services Group, Lockheed Martin, Morgan Stanley, Nishimoto Trading, Shinsei Bank, and Weyerhaeuser. Since 1999, the Bridging Scholarship program has awarded more than 700 scholarships to students studying abroad in Japan.   The deadline for applications for fall 2007 scholarships is April 5, 2007. Successful applicants will be notified by May 30. Selection will be based on academic potential and financial need.   Each scholarship recipient will be expected to send a brief report on his or her study in Japan to the ATJ office within 60 days of returning from abroad. These reports will be valuable both for students who plan to study abroad in Japan and for teachers and advisors who are helping students to select suitable programs of study. Recipients will also be invited to participate in a research project that assesses the impact of study abroad in Japan on language skills and personal growth.   Two additional scholarships of $7,500 will be awarded by Morgan Stanley Japan to the winners of an essay contest in conjunction with the Bridging Scholarship competition.   Applications and information brochures are available from the ATJ office. Downloadable forms and other materials on study abroad in Japan are available at ATJ's Web site.
