The Japan-America Student Conference is a month-long opportunity for American and Japanese students to discuss issues that affect both nations and the world. It takes place in Japan and the U.S. in alternating years; the 2002 conference will be held in the U.S. The theme of the 54th annual JASC is "Redefining the Role of Japan and the U.S. in Contemporary Social Issues." American delegates are selected from all fields of study and range from first-year college students to Ph.D. candidates. English is the primary language of the conference. The tentative schedule for the 2002 conference is from July 24 through August 21, starting at Howard University in Washington, D.C., then moving to Oberlin College, Ohio, and ending at the University of Guam. There is a participation fee, which covers food, lodging, and group travel; however, many delegates receive full or partial support from their universities or other organizations. Applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2002. Contact: Japan-America Student Conference, Inc., 2nd Floor, 606 18th St. NW, Washington, DC 20006. Tel.: 202/ 289-4231.
