Joint Center for East Asian Studies Symposium and Bunraku Performance

In celebration of its tenth anniversary, the Joint Center for East Asian Studies (a collaboration between Washington University and the University of St. Louis-Missouri) will sponsor the symposium "East Asian Studies and the Popular American Imagination," September 22, 2001 from 1:00-5:00 in the Women's Building on the Washington University campus. The symposium will feature Kyoko Mori, author of Polite Lies and The Dream of Water, and Chen-yi Chang, animator for the Disney feature Mulan. Presenters and participants will discuss the way "East Asia" has been constructed in the popular American imagination and the role that East Asian Studies programs have in shaping this construction. The symposium will be followed by a dinner. Those interested in attending should contact the East Asian Studies Program at Washington University: 314/935-4448.

In October the Joint Center will sponsor a performance by the Tonda Bunraku Troupe. The performance will take place on October 3, 2001 from 8:00 pm in the J.C. Penney auditorium on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus. Call 314/516-5753 or 314/935-4448 for more information.
