- CARLA Update
- The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) at the University of Minnesota is one of seven National Language Resource Centers. The Center coordinates programs which relate to second language learning and teaching, and has produced an electronic newsletter since the spring of 1997. Beginning in May 1998 a paper newsletter will be produced as well. The newsletters discuss CARLA projects focusing on second language learning and technology, language and culture studies, immersion education, and the like.
- CATERS: Computer-Assisted Technical Reading System
- CATERS is a computer-based reading laboratory system that offers an environment in which learners can choose reading materials that match their own interests and proficiency level. CATERS is a Macintosh program available for free download at this site as long as it is used for educational, non-commercial purposes.

- Cornell's FALCON Program
- The Full-year Asian Language CONcentration Program of Cornell University offers intensive courses in Japanese starting Summer 1999 and continuing through the academic year. In just one year students cover the equivalent of approximately three years of language study in a normal academic program. Due to small class sizes and the high caliber of instruction, they are able to reach a level of fluency and control rarely attained in any academic program regardless of length. A limited number of FLAS fellowships--full tuition plus a stipend--will be available to applicants who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and who will have at least an undergraduate degree by the beginning of the program. - Concordia Summer Language Program
- The College of Education at Concordia College, in Moorhead, Minnesota, offers an opportunity for language teachers--or students studying to become Japanese teachers--at the K-8 level to develop skills in teaching and curriculum development at this summer program. Four semester hours of credit can be earned through the month-long program, whose staff includes an expert teacher of K-8 Japanese. Follow the CLV links on the above home page for more information.
- Education About Asia
"Education about Asia" is a valuable new journal sponsored by the Association of Asian Studies. Established in 1996, the journal addresses issues associated with teaching about Asia and includes articles on all levels of instruction. Geared toward classroom educators, feature articles typically offer extensive information on resources and materials related to the topic. In addition, there are in-depth reviews of books, films, and electronic resources relating to Asia and Asian studies. Past articles include "Americaźs Hiroshima: Culture Wars and the Classroom," "Stories are Not Frills: Literature About Asia in the Elementary Classroom," and "Internet and Case Study Resources on Asian Economic Issues." Education About Asia is a great tool for teachers of classes on Asian cultures and languages.
The journal is published three times a year. Subscriptions are included in membership in the Association of Asian Studies.
The editor of "Education About Asia" welcomes submissions of feature articles and resource essays, especially those which include information about language teaching. - Genki: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese
- The Japan Times has recently begun publishing a new series on introductory Japanese: "Genki". Volume 1 (ISBN 4-7890-0963-7) of the "Genki" series is now available at the retail price of 3,000 yen, and will be joined by Volume 2 (to be published in summer 1999), CDs, Workbooks, and a Teacher's Manual. In 23 lessons, "Genki" covers basic structural patterns up to causative-passive sentences, about 1,100 words (including more current words such as 'denshi meeru'), and 317 kanji (including all for the Level 3 Proficiency Test). "Genki" is abundantly illustrated and features a wide variety of exercises. The "Genki" series has been written by Eri Banno, Yutaka Ohno, Yoko Sakane, Chikako Shinagawa, and Kyoko Tokashiki (Kansai Gaidai University). - JP-NET is expanding the on-line resources developed by language instructors at MIT into a clearinghouse for tools, services , and information for Japanese language and culture teachers and students worldwide. The site features teaching materials, library access, and other resources for Japanese language teaching and learning.
- Japan-America Student Conference
- The Japan-America Student Conference is an annual event which is entirely managed by and for university students. The Conference venue alternates between Japan and the U.S.; participants from the two countries exchange views on issues of concern to both societies. Information and application forms are available on the Web site.

- The Japan Foundation was established in 1972, and was Japan's first international cultural exchange organization.
