CU, Boulder CHIN 2110/2120 Syllabus
Summer 2007 (Term A: June 4-July 6 Term B: July 10-August 10)
Instructor: Chen Jin Office: HUMN 247
E-mail: chenj@colorado.edu Tel: 303-735-5828
The prerequisites for intermediate Chinese are CHIN 1010 and 1020 or equivalent. The dialect taught is Mandarin. Both simplified and traditional characters will be introduced but only traditional characters will be used in classroom instructions. All students who have not taken CHIN 1020 are required to take placement test at the beginning of the term.
The emphasis in this class is on building up vocabulary and sentence structures in communicative contexts as well as building a solid foundation in pronunciation. Reading and writing skills will be developed in conjunction with speaking and listening skills. Upon successful completion of the course, students are expected to carry out simple conversations in Chinese on a limited range of topics and be able to speak, read, and write all new words that appear in vocabulary lists in the textbook.
Performance and assignments: Students turn in journals and workbook exercises after each lesson and have short vocabulary quizzes on a daily basis. Learning Chinese requires a commitment of time and effort, so students should expect to spend at least two hours every day preparing for class. Your attendance and active participation at each class session is required. To strengthen your classroom performance, it is necessary that you come to class well-prepared. Your attendance and classroom performance will be evaluated and reflected in your final grade.
Group discussions: Since one-on-one tutoring is not available at this time, we will have one hour group discussion sessions three days (Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:50-1:50) a week in my office at HUMN 247 (TBA). You can practice speaking with me, chat in Chinese with your classmates or ask questions during these sessions. Group discussions are not required but will be an essential part for a successful Chinese learning experience.

Students and faculty each have responsibility for maintaining an appropriate learning environment. Students who fail to adhere to such behavioral standards may be subject to discipline. Faculty has the professional responsibility to treat all students with understanding, dignity and respect, to guide classroom discussion and to set reasonable limits on the manner in which they and their students express opinions. Professional courtesy and sensitivity are especially important with respect to individuals and topics dealing with differences of race, culture, religion, politics, sexual orientation, gender, gender variance, and nationalities. Class rosters are provided to the instructor with the student's legal name. I will gladly honor your request to address you by an alternate name or gender pronoun. Please advise me of this preference early in the semester so that I may make appropriate changes to my records. See polices at
