Course Objectives

The main focus of the course will be to explore some of the most intriguing aspects of Japanese syntax to non-native learners from the pedagogical perspective. 

 

Hopefully, by taking this course, the student will have a better understanding and awareness of how Japanese speakers construct their thoughts, express their feelings, and express their world view through the use of the language.

 

The course will have the following components:

  1. Typological characteristics of the Japanese language, an overview.
  2. Very brief overview of phonetics, phonology, and morphology of the Japanese language
  3. Japanese syntax as seen from the pedagogical perspective.
  4. Additional topics relating to the pedagogical grammar of Japanese
  5. Student presentations

The unit consists of the introduction of  the material, student practice, and assessment.

  1. Prepare a reflective report on the whole process
  2. Present your findings
  3. Turn in the written report (include your research findings, lesson plan, exercises, assessments, student performance, and your reflection)
