Methods of Teaching East Asian Languages
Course Description: An overview of pedagogical theory and methods for teaching of an East Asian language as a second/foreign language to secondary and post-secondary students.
Required Texts:
Alice Omaggio Hadley, Teaching Language in Context, 3rd Boston, Heinle & Heinle, 2001.
Articles and book chapters (will be available in the course file Chinese and Japanese TA offices)
Evaluation: Grades will be based on class participation, reflective log-keeping (electronic), and homework assignments (45%), reports on required class visits (form provided) (10%), book & article review (10%), project/presentation(15%), technology assignments(10%), and a teaching portfolio (10%).
Assignments:
Class participation, reflective log, homework assignments: For each week there will be reading assignments from the texts. Your active participation in in-class AND on-line discussion is crucial.
- Work through the on-line workbook to accompany the main textbook at:
http://tlc.heinle.com/ . Submit the on-line exercises to your instructor no later than Sunday before the class, so that she has time to go over your answers.
- Keep a weekly reflective log of the class, and if possible, send it in to your instructor on a weekly basis. Otherwise, include a hard copy of the entire log in the portfolio at the end of the semester.
- Participating in the discussion forum for this course on WebCT. Weekly.
Reports on required class visits: You are required to visit four (4) classes taught by faculty or experienced TAs in languages other than the one you teach. For each visit, fill out the observation form and also write a reflective paragraph. Due Week 16.
Book & article review: Choose one topic (list of suggested topics and resource guide on separate sheet) and find one full book and five articles on the topic. For the book, write a one-page critical review. For the articles, make an annotated bibliography. Due Week 16.
Project/presentation: See separate handout for detailed description.
Proposal/Outline due Week 4. Presentation/Submission due Week 16.
Technology assignments:
- Prepare an annotated list of on-line teaching and learning resources that are relevant to the course you are TAing this semester. Annotate each site. Due Week Nine.
- Design one exercise using a web page for the course you are TAing. Refer to the resource list for the book & article review resource list. Due Week Ten.
Teaching portfolio: See separate handout for detailed description of the requirement. Due Week 16.
