During the Spring 2005 semester, the Chancellor's Committee on Women (CCW) will be undertaking a study of the campus as an environment for women in which to work and study. We strive to provide a supportive and productive working and learning environment for all women on campus. In order to accomplish this, it is important to identify the issues of concern to women, and to develop effective strategies for overcoming obstacles which may negatively impact our campus environment.
Recent attention has been focused on the problems of sexual assault, sexual harassment and intimidation. Campus discussions over the past years have also focused on other issues that limit women's ability to work and study effectively, and to take advantage of the opportunities the campus can offer. Many of these issues have been identified in the annual Status of Women reports produced by the CCW and include: salary equity, classroom behavior problems, relationships with colleagues, and balancing the demands of work and private lives. Running through the reports and through campus discussions has been a concern that information does not flow well between the campus administration and the grassroots; a new mechanism is needed to enhance the flow of information in both directions on a regular basis.
In order to address these issues -- and others that might be raised by women on campus -- we have asked the Chancellor's Committee on Women to suggest ways in which we can improve the campus environment. Given the diversity of opinions
and perspectives held by women, we suspect that not every recommendation can be implemented, but we welcome the ideas that women and other campus community members have about the steps we can take to improve the campus environment for
women.
Over the next ten weeks, CCW will be organizing a series of town hall meetings with women students, staff, and faculty in order to solicit ideas about 1) how best to address the issues that have been raised in previous venues such as the Status of Women reports, LEAP and student surveys, and 2) to ensure input from diverse groups and perspectives on campus, i.e., by soliciting ideas from both women and men, from students, staff and faculty. Schedule of the town hall meetings can be found on the meetings section of this website.
Further information about the study is available from Lynn Staeheli.
