Captioning Services

Two types of captioning services are available to Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing students, staff, and faculty in the classroom or at events on campus. C-Print and Computer-Aided Realtime Transcription (CART) provide instant translation of spoken language into readable English text performed by captionists using a computer equipped with specialized software. The text is then displayed on a computer monitor or other display device. The transcript is stored in word processing files and is easily transferred to diskette or via e-mail.

C-Print includes as much of the instructor's and students' discourse as possible; however, C-Print will reflect a condensed version of a discourse. CART uses stenosystem, a word-for-word transcription system. CART's text on the screen and transcript will reflect everything going on in the environment, including environmental sounds and speaker identifiers (e.g., instructor, male student, laughter, applause, etc.) The following example shows how the C-Print text is a condensed version CART:

CART text:

INSTRUCTOR: We are talking about those personal factors. We are talking about my perception of roles in the family, and family roles were discussed in chapter 5. Yes? Do you have a question?
MALE STUDENT: Which page is it in chapter 5?
INSTRUCTOR: (COUGHING) It's on page 127.

C-Print text:

We are talking about those personal factors such as my perception of roles in the family discussed in Chapter 5 on page 127.

Students approved for captioniong can submit a request for captioning through the internet or by fill out a request for captioning form at DHHS office. Students are required to complete the form at least four weeks in advance before classes start.
