Important Related Information
Disability/ADA
Training
DS is available to provide individual disability/ADA training for departments
and units on campus. These training sessions are done in collaboration
with the ADA coordinator and can be tailored to the specific needs of
a department or unit. (303-492-8671)
Emergency Evacuation
Each building should have an emergency evacuation plan for people with
disabilities. Consult with the ADA coordinator for specifics. (303-492-6706)
Grievance Process
To file a formal grievance based on discrimination, contact the Department
of Equal Opportunity (Willard Hall 209, 303-492-6706).
Parking on Campus for People with Disabilities
Disability parking permits for campus parking areas may be acquired by
submitting an Application for Disability Parking Privileges form.
This form is available at Parking Services, 1050 Regent Drive, Campus
Box 502, 303-492-7384. A state issued disability license plate or permit
is required when using disability parking meters or spaces on campus;
in Boulder County, call 303-441-3510.
Residence Halls
Students with disabilities should direct requests for disability-related
accommodations to the Department of Housing. DS will provide a letter
verifying the documentation of a disability, upon the student's request.
The Department of Housing makes the final determination regarding the
student's request.
Disability Services is available to provide information and/or training
to residence hall staff regarding disability-related issues. It is important
that residence hall staff be aware of potential barriers to access (communication,
physical, program, attitudinal, etc.) that may exist and are encouraged
to work with DS to remove as many barriers as possible. (See "Sensitivity
and Awareness of Disabilities.")
Staff and Faculty with Disabilities
Disability Services and the ADA coordinator work together to provide
support, advocacy, and services to staff and faculty with disabilities.
These two offices can assist in the determination of appropriate accommodations,
campus referral, and the provision of technical information. All information
is confidential.
Temporary Disabilities
Although students with temporary disabilities are not covered under the
Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Disability Services is available
to assist these students with their needs. Faculty can refer students
with temporary disabilities to DS where a disability specialist will work
individually with the student to determine appropriate intervention and
support services, if any. This could include test accommodations, resources
for physical access, classroom and/or lab needs.
Test Anxiety
One of the most frequently asked questions regarding test accommodations
relates to test anxiety. While DS acknowledges that students may be highly
impacted by test anxiety, it is not, in and of itself, a disability. Therefore,
DS cannot advocate for a student who requests test accommodations related
to anxiety. Also, faculty members are not legally required to provide
test accommodations for students with test anxiety.
