Azmat Hassan

S. Azmat Hassan is adjunct professor at the John C. Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations, Seton Hall University, New Jersey. Earlier in his diplomatic career he served as ambassador from Pakistan to Malaysia, Syria, and Morocco. At the foreign ministry in Pakistan, Hassan was the head of the Middle East division from 1991-92 and served as additional secretary to the prime minister of Pakistan from 1992-94.

Hassan has been at the Whitehead School of Diplomacy since 2000. He was a visiting professor in 2006 and 2007 at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in Pakistan, teaching courses on the politics of terrorism, U.S. involvement in the Middle East, and the modern Middle East. His keynote essay on perspectives on Pakistan was published in 2006 by the Cambridge Scholars Press in Home and the World: South Asia in Transition. He has continued to lecture on the Middle East and Pakistan to various audiences. Apart from his teaching duties at the Whitehead School, he currently teaches a course on the geopolitics of South Asia at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs.

Hassan has been active in the media, giving numerous TV and radio interviews on current international issues. In February 2008, he was a guest on the popular One on One with Steve Adubato show. He received a BA in economics, political science, and history from Punjab University in Lahore, Pakistan; an MA in economics from Cambridge University; and an MS in strategic studies from Quaid-E-Azam University in Islamabad, Pakistan.
