Chris Mercogliano has been a teacher since 1973 at the Albany Free School, a unique, freedom-based, inner-city alternative school. He became co-director in 1985. His essays, commentaries, and reviews have appeared in numerous newspapers, journals, and magazines, as well as in three anthologies: Deschooling Our Lives, Creating Learning Communities, and Field Day: Getting Society Out of School. He is also the author of Making It Up As We Go Along, the Story of the Albany Free School and Teaching the Restless, One School’s Remarkable No-Ritalin Approach to Helping Children Learn and Succeed.
Mercogliano has been featured on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Radio’s Ideas, and other nationally syndicated radio shows. He also serves on the advisory board of the National Coalition of Alternative Community Schools and is a deacon in the Presbyterian Church.
