Mark Magnier is Beijing bureau chief with the Los Angeles Times. Before moving to China 18 months ago, he was the paperís bureau chief in Japan where he oversaw Japanese political, security, financial, and cultural coverage. Magnier has also done extended tours in Iraq, Israel, the West Bank, East Timor, Korea, and Kashmir. Before joining the Times, he worked at the Journal of Commerce in New York, San Francisco, Singapore, and Tokyo, where he specialized in international business, global trade, and transportation issues.
Magnier is a graduate of Columbia College and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. He is the Los Angeles Times Editorial Award recipient for 1998 and 2002. Other awards include the Knight-Ridder Award for Editorial Excellence, the Atrium Award, and the Cavior Award.
