His Excellency Karl Auguste Offmann is the second President of the Republic of Mauritius, his Presidency having extended from February 2002 through October 2003. He is currently the Lloyd G. Balfour African President in Residence at the African Presidential Archives and Research Center at Boston University.
Mr. Offmann was born on November 25, 1940. After completing secondary school at the Royal College of Port Louis in 1956, he studied mechanical engineering and received a certificate in mechanical engineering from the government of Mauritius in 1963. He then went on to study social and political science at Claver House in London, receiving a degree in 1975.
In 1976, Mr. Offmann entered full time politics and served as a government minister until his election to the Presidency in 2002. As the current Balfour African President in Residence, he shares his experiences as an African leader and his insights on the dynamics of successful multiethnic societies.
