James S. Turner is a partner in the law firm of Swankin & Turner in Washington, D.C. He also is president of the National Institute for Science, Law & Public Policy, a nonprofit organization founded to bridge the gap between scientific uncertainties and the need for laws protecting public health and safety.

Turner joined Ralph Nader in founding the Center for the Study of Responsive Law. While there he wrote The Chemical Feast: the Nader Report on the Food and Drug Administration and co-authored Making Your Own Baby Food, which reflects his continued concern about the nutritional quality of food for infants.

Turner served with the U.S. Department of State advisory committee on international investment and has traveled extensively on State Department projects. He has been special counsel to the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs and has served on advisory committees at the National Institute of Health, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Energy.

Turner also represents individual consumers, consumer groups and environmental groups on a range of matters concerning food, drug, health, environmental and product safety law. Reflecting his interest in the benefits to consumers of emerging health systems, he served for ten years on the national Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

Turner is a graduate of the Ohio State University School of Law. He continues to work on the development of mechanisms for better interaction among consumer, business and government organizations, serving on the boards of many consumer interest groups.
