When she’s not pestering elected officials, corporate evildoers or pursuing her dream of a prescription drug benefit for seniors, Ellen McGirt occasionally shows up at her job at MONEY Magazine and writes about healthcare, travel and the coming crisis in just about everything. She is a primary contributor to MONEY’s Real People section, which profiles ordinary geniuses who solve financial problems in unique ways. Writing profiles is the purest joy she knows, it feeds her obsessive need to find order in the chaos and meaning in the madness.
A personal epiphany after September 11th inspired her to toss her career plan, enlist a companion, max out her credit card and discover America in a 16,000 mile roadtrip. The people they met and the adventures they had are being compiled into a book. Barring any smiting from the publishing gods, Love Letter From America will emerge in 2004.
McGirt first earned a national reputation as a writer and online community builder as the founder of CassandrasRevenge.com, an award-winning investor education website for women. McGirt, a former columnist for AOL and Oxygen Media, can regularly be found yapping on CBS, CNN, MSNBC, Good Day NY and--in the spirit of keeping it real--BET. McGirt spent ten years in the art, non-profit and museum world, and is a graduate of Brown University. She is a fifth generation New Yorker, which means more to her now than it ever did.
