Charles Jess is completing his second year as the U.S. Department of State’s Senior Country Officer for Vietnam, with responsibility for all bilateral political, military and consular affairs between the United States and Vietnam. A career Foreign Service Officer since 1989, Jess has served in consular positions at U.S. embassies in Bangkok, Tokyo, Vientiane and at the U.S. Consulate General in Perth. In preparation for his onward assignment as the U.S. Consul in Shanghai, Jess is looking forward to studying Chinese language in the fall.
In a previous lifetime, Jess mathematics domestically and in Nepal, Indonesia and Bolivia. He graduated from Duke University in 1972, received his master's degree from Emory in 1976 and did further post-graduate study in mathematics education and human problem-solving at Stanford in the late 1970s. His foreign languages include Thai, Lao, Spanish and Nepalese.
An accomplished violinist, Jess enjoys all types of music, especially the blues. As a Duke Blue Devil alum, he admits to being a rabid fan of college basketball. He and his wife Mary have two children.
