Tamsin Maxwell has a keen interest in communication, both verbal and nonverbal. She received her MSc in cognitive science from the University of Edinburgh, and in summer 2014, she expects to receive her PhD in informatics from the same institution. The identification of key terms to improve open domain and web search was the focus of her thesis. As part of her studies, she recently completed two years as a visiting scholar at the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR) at the University of Massachusetts.
In addition to her academic work, Maxwell studies professional dance. In 2013 she taught Arabic-American fusion at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. She currently works with Snake Dance Theater Company based in Boston, and she performs independently.
Earlier in her career, Maxwell worked at Burson-Marsteller public relations in London, where she directed communications for Fortune 100 clients in fast-moving consumer goods industries, healthcare, and government. This involved the design of campaigns to engage audiences locally and internationally, and included integrated advertising and promotions.
Maxwell has a BA in architecture from the University of California and has traveled off the beaten track in much of Asia, South America, and Australasia. She currently lives in Cambridge, MA, with her husband, Gregor.
