Robert Egger is the founder and president of L.A. Kitchen, being developed in partnership with the AARP Foundation, which will use fresh fruits and vegetables to prepare healthy snacks, entrees, and other products for aging citizens. Egger pioneered this model during his 25-year tenure as president of the DC Central Kitchen, where food donated by hospitality businesses and farms is used to fuel a culinary arts job training program. Since 1989, this self-sustaining enterprise has produced more than 28 million meals and helped a thousand men and women gain full-time employment.
Egger is also the founder and president of CForward, an advocacy organization that rallies employees of the nonprofit sector to educate political candidates about the economic role that nonprofits play in the community, and supports candidates who have detailed plans to strengthen the economy including nonprofits.
In Washington, D.C., he was the founding chair of both the Mayor's Commission on Nutrition and the newspaper Street Sense, as well as the co-convener of the first Nonprofit Congress. Currently, he serves on the boards of the National Addiction Recovery Program, Back on My Feet, the Philanthropic Collaborative, and the World Central Kitchen.
A recipient of numerous awards, Egger has been named a Washingtonian of the Year, an Oprah Angel, and the 2004 James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of the Year. His book Begging for Change: The Dollars and Sense of Making Nonprofits Responsive, Efficient and Rewarding for All , received the 2005 McAdam Book Award for Best Nonprofit Management Book.
