Waste Reduction
Goal: Zero-waste for all construction projects and campus operations
CU-Boulder does an excellent job of recycling a majority of the waste from our capital construction projects. Our smaller construction projects don’t come with LEED building requirements, and therefore need a little help with recycling waste from these projects. The campus is piloting a program to encourage all contractors on campus, no matter the size of the project, to recycle a majority of their construction and demolition (C&D) waste.
Efforts to reduce waste from campus operations being sent to landfills have also been extremely successful, as shown below:
Other initiatives include:
- Investigating recycling options for waste from campus maintenance and grounds construction projects
- Seeking funding for a potential oil filter diversion program
- Outdoor zero waste stations around campus
- Influencing vendors to reduce the amount of packaging
- Standing Order Contract (SOC) program
