"Do Power Lines Cause Cancer?"
Several studies, at the University of Colorado and elsewhere, have indicated that exposure to high levels of magnetic fields near certain power lines may elevate cancer risk in children. Such magnetic fields cannot initiate cancer by themselves but might "promote" the effect of other cancer causing agents such as those contained in vehicle exhaust fumes. CU researcher Howard Wachtel and Robert Pearson, Vice President, CH2Mhill, used an advanced geographic information system (GIS) analysis to explore this possibility. This exhibit presents information about the occurrence of cancer in children living in "dual exposure zones."
