What’s going on with the CU Wizards
this month?
"Light,
Polarization and Liquid Crystals" Saturday,
February 17, 2007, 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
Duane Physics and Astrophysics G1B30
In the Liquid Crystal
Wizards Show, children (and their parents)
learn about light, how various materials interact
with light, and in particular discover the
magic of liquid crystals. The presentation
touches on atoms and molecules, the size and
shape of molecules, and how liquid crystals
can "switch" light with electric
fields and be used for displays. Each student
receives an optics kit, including a pair of
polarizers, in order to experiment with light
at home. The CU Wizards Program is an entertaining
and informal introduction to astronomy, biology,
chemistry and physics for science enthusiasts
in fifth through ninth grades.
The CU Wizards Program provides an informal,
entertaining and interactive introduction
to chemistry, physics, biology and astronomy.
Concepts are aimed at students in the fifth
to ninth grades, but all ages are welcome
to come learn, have fun, and experience science
hands-on. Shows are held at 9:30 AM on the
CU Boulder campus, one Saturday each month
from September through June and last approximately
one hour. The CU Wizards are CU professors
in the sciences who donate their knowledge,
time, expertise and energy creating entertaining
and engaging science shows for free to the
public.
