  CU4K12 Newsletter December, 2006

Happy Holidays, and welcome to the December 2006 issue of CU4K12 News. Each month, this newsletter highlights two K-12 outreach programs from the University of Colorado at Boulder campus. There are more than 200 listings on the CU4K12 site, with programs designed to augment a wide array of K-12 curricula. All programs that are featured in the newsletter are open to broad enrollment. This Month’s Feature CU Hotspot for Kids:

 The Fiske Planetarium
The Fiske Planetarium is a great idea for a last minute field trip before the end of the year or a fun and informative suggestion for parents needing some activities over the holiday break. Also plan ahead for next year by downloading the Spring 2007 calendar. Programs this month include:

Mars Revealed - December 1, 2006, 7:30 pm
Explore Mars from a new perspective as Fiske Planetarium unveils its newest public show -- Mars Revealed. Created by CU faculty and students, this show features the latest discoveries and analysis from Mars.

Season of Light - December 2, 9, and 16 2006, 2:00 pm
A holiday show that investigates the origins of why we celebrate the holidays the way we do. After examining astronomical signs such as the Christmas star, solstice celebrations, and Jewish traditions, the show takes on a blend of holiday songs and laser lights for a holiday spectacular!

The Great Space Chase - December 22, 2006, 10:00 am & December 27, 2006, 1:00 pm
Take a journey through the cosmos with intergalactic traveler Lt. Foting in search of a missing intergalactic accelerator suit. As he uncovers the mystery also learn about the science of space travel and the splendors of the universe.

What’s going on with the CU Wizards this month?

 "Go with the Flow"
Saturday, December 23, 2006, 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
Join Professor Janet DeGrazia for the last session of 2006. Celebrate the season with a mix of science and the holiday spirit.

The CU Wizards Program provides an informal, entertaining and interactive introduction to chemistry, physics, biology and astronomy. Concepts are aimed at students in the fifth to ninth grades, but all ages are welcome to come learn, have fun, and experience science hands-on. Shows are held at 9:30 AM on the CU Boulder campus, one Saturday each month from September through June and last approximately one hour. The CU Wizards are CU professors in the sciences who donate their knowledge, time, expertise and energy creating entertaining and engaging science shows for free to the public.

CU-Boulder Community Relations regularly plans excursions to the Boulder campus. We can arrange for a variety of experiences, including meeting with current students, campus tours, science shows, and much more.
