  CU4K12 Newsletter May, 2005

Summer school is in session at CU-Boulder, and things are quiet. While we still have 5,000 students on campus, without our normal 30,000-strong crowd things seem a little empty. If you are running a summer program, this is a great time to bring kids onto campus and explore. Please explore our campus visit program and contact one of our coordinators to help you plan your trip.

Also this summer there are dozens of camps for K-12 students and continuing contact programs for educators. The University of Colorado at Boulder offers many opportunities for learning and playing over the summer break. Please visit the rest of the CU4K12 web site to learn more about these activities and how you and your students can take advantage of these opportunities. Also visit the CU-Boulder summer camps web site, for more links to specific summer programs.

Philosophy Outreach Program of Colorado
From personal identity and authenticity to the philosophic principles that underlie the U.S. Constitution, the CU-Boulder Philosophy Department's outreach programs engage young thinkers with profound questions. The program sends graduate student teachers into middle and high school classrooms across the state conducting introductory sessions on various topics of philosophy and operates the Summer Philosophy Institute of Colorado for high school students.

The program is designed to introduce students to the methods and subject matter of philosophy, the relevance of philosophical debate to their studies as well as in their daily lives and to demonstrate the means of introducing critical thinking in the classroom.  The Philosophy and Outreach Program offers special topics discussions in English, Science and History classes.

CU Museum
The CU Museum houses one of the most extensive and respected natural history collections from the Rocky Mountain and the Plains regions.  With more than 4 million different artifacts and specimens, it offers various educational programs from kindergarten to graduate level exhibits and educational tours, making it one of the top university natural science museums in the country.

The CU Museum has traveling temporary exhibits and three galleries that showcase the permanent exhibits:

  • The Anthropology Hall: contains research on the lives and traditions of the Ancient Puebloan, Navajo, Zuni and Hopi peoples of the American Southwest.  This exhibits showcases an abundance of sandals, pottery, and tools from the archaeological sites of Olsen-Chubbick, Yellowjacket, and Canyon de Chelley.
  • The Biology Hall: exhibits the natural wildlife of Colorado with bald eagles, bobcats, and butterflies on display.  The hall allows for students to gain a close look at the biodiversity of the Rocky Mountain region.
  • Geology Hall: contains one of North America's oldest dinosaur fossils.  The hall features triceratops, saber-toothed cats, and a variety of reptile, dinosaur, and mammal fossils 225 Million years old!
  • Discovery Corner: allows for children to explore natural history through hands on specimen and artifacts.  The exhibit is unstructured so it allows flexibility for teachers and parents.  Go at your own pace and explore your own interests and learning styles.

The museum field trip opportunities include: themed programs, guided tours, student workshops, and self guided tours.  The classroom resources include Discovery Kits, Natural Science Exploration Cases, and Critter Cases.  Teachers are also encouraged to attend workshops offered throughout the school year.
