School Safety Study (2006- )

Schools should be a place of learning. The goal of safe school planning is to create and maintain a positive and welcoming school climate, free of drugs, violence, intimidation, and fear; an environment in which teachers can teach and students can learn. Recently, school tragedies from around the nation have reminded us of the importance of safe school planning and maintaining a safe school environment.

In order to assess the preparedness and vulnerabilities of schools, the National Center for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) has been funded by the Department of Homeland Security to conduct social and behavioral science research on the prediction, detection, and prevention of terrorist attacks. Part of this research involves the collection of information on community and school preparedness for all hazards, including terrorism-related events. The University of Colorado at Boulder is a core university in this research effort.

As part of this School Based Preparedness Study, researchers from the University of Colorado have randomly selected school districst to participate in this study to help us understand current efforts to address school preparedness for all hazards. If you have been selected to participate in this study, please click here. Please have your login and password ready.
