Course Descriptions:

Course A -- Genetics: Large lecture. MCDB 2150 Principles of Genetics. (Jenny Knight) MWF 9-9:50. MUEN E050. Large lecture class, clickers with peer discussion and random call responses. Jenny has been using clickers for over 10 year. Observers welcome on the following dates only: 2/23, 2/25, 2/27, 3/2 and 3/4. Course description here.

Course B -- Chemistry: Medium lecture. CHEM 1271 General Chemistry 2 for Chemistry and Biochemistry Majors. (Amy Palmer) MWF 11-11:50. Ekeley E1B20. Second-semester majors course, 60 students. Course description here.

Course C -- Intro Biology: Large lecture. EBIO 1220 General Biology 2 (Kendi Davies) MWF 12:30-1:45 and 2:00-3:15. MATH 100. Large lecture class (200-400 students). The course is Introductory Biology, covering plant diversity and ecology during observation period. Clickers used to facilitate learning rather than recall, and to have the students engage more deeply with the material. Clickers are used in a variety of ways from working through case studies, to encouraging thinking around videos, to working out how a particular biological system works. TAs facilitate learning in class. Kendi has been using clickers for 7 years. Observers are welcome after 3/5/15. Course description here.

Course D -- Intro Astronomy: Medium lecture. ASTR 1010 Introductory Astronomy 1 (Douglas Duncan) TTH 2-3:15 DUAN G1B20. Medium sized lecture (125 students). Clickers used with “participation stickies” to get a high fraction of students talking/debating. Students are encouraged to think critically, and to use the internet to find good (or bad) science. Doug has been using clickers since 2002. Observers are welcome any dates except 2/19/15. Course description here.

Course E -- Non-majors Physics: Large lecture. PHYS 2020 General Physics 2 (Steven Pollock) MWF 3-3:50 DUAN G1B30. Introductory second semester “algebra-based” non-majors course, designed for biology students. Clicker questions each class, interspersed with lecture and demos. Sometimes get "silent votes" first, followed by a group vote, but mostly allow discussion right away with neighbors. Opportunity to observe how Steve encourages conversation, elicits student voice, supports students, and provides "hidden curriculum" messages about challenge level, relevance to their life, etc. Steve has been using clickers since 2000. Course F -- Upper division physics: Small lecture. PHYS 4230 Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics (Michael Dubson) MWF 3-3:50 DUAN G130. Small lecture (65 students). Frequent use of clickers with peer instruction to solidify concepts introduced in lecture. Mike has been using clickers for 20 years. Observers are welcome from 2/20 to 3/13. Course G -- Intro Quantitative Biology. EBIO 1010 Quantitative Thinking (Andrew Martin, Brett Melbourne) TTH 4-5:15 GOLD A120. Medium sized class (100 students), preparing students to think quantitatively in biology and in their lives. The class employs an active learning, discovery/enquiry style, with lots of hands on collaborative work, especially using the R environment for statistical computing. Clickers are integrated into the classroom, but are not emphasized. Clickers are used in a variety of ways -- straight up clicker questions, participatory experiments, feedback, progress monitoring. Good opportunity to see how clickers can be used to support an active learning environment.

Course H -- Non-majors physics: Medium lecture. PHYS 2130 General Physics 3 -- Modern Physics Quantum Mechanics. (Noah Finkelstein) TTH 5-6:15 DUAN G1B20. Third semester of the introductory sequence, for non-physics science and engineering majors.150 students.Course goal: understand the microscopic origin of the behavior of materials that you may encounter in the world around you or in technological applications. (Limit of 8 observers per day, no observations on March 19 due to an exam). Course description here.
