Karen has been Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) since 2007. She is an alumna of UCB receiving her master’s and doctorate in Clinical Psychology. She also holds a master’s of education in Counseling from University of Texas at Austin. She has been a licensed psychologist in Colorado for over 25 years. Previously, she has worked in higher education and K-12 education and business as Dean of Students, Vice President of Student Affairs, International Exchange Counselor, Diversity Consultant and Associate School Psychologist.
Karen believes that a counseling center staff should be engaged in clinical and community work to help students in distress, to reach out to those in the campus community who will never enter CAPS’ door, and to promote a healthier campus climate. Karen strives to build a diverse and culturally competent staff to meet the wide variety of needs in the CU community. Karen works for the "ripple effect": educating all campus community members to support each other or assist each other in getting help when needed. She is passionate about consulting with faculty, staff, students, parents, community members, groups and departments. She enjoys making presentations about CAPS’ free services and a variety of diversity and mental health topics.
When Karen is not at CU she enjoys her family, the arts, and working in the community to improve social justice.
