In the spirit of the international goals outlined in Flagship 2030 and of everyone on campus who works toward these goals, the Office of International Education recognizes annually those who represent the best in global citizenship. Our campus’s global education initiatives prepare our students for the opportunities and challenges of an increasingly interdependent world community. It’s critical that we express appreciation for our friends and colleagues who have supported global education through their hard work and effort. Nominating someone for one of the annual OIE Global Citizen Awards
is a great way to do this. These awards honor and recognize outstanding contributions to international understanding by members of the CU-Boulder community. Award recipients are honored during a special awards ceremony on November 13, 2013 during International Education Week. There are three awards:
Campus Global Citizen of the Year 2013
Muneeb Kamal International Student of the Year 2013
Study Abroad Student of the Year 2013
You may know a global citizen in one of these categories who would be an excellent candidate! The following people won the awards last year:
Dr. Julie J. Yun - Campus Global Citizen of the Year 2012
Dr. Julie Yun, Assistant Director of Counseling and Psychological Services, has made it her mission to foster mutual understanding among people of diverse backgrounds and to advocate for international student issues. She has served on many panels, task forces, and committees, going way beyond her job description in her efforts. Many seek her counsel in cross-cultural matters.
Waqas A. Qazi - Muneeb Kamal International Student of the Year 2012
Waqas Qazi, former Ph.D. candidate in Aerospace Engineering Sciences, came to the University of Colorado Boulder from Pakistan with a Fulbright scholarship. While here, he actively worked toward creating understanding among various cultures and people. He served in various leadership capacities, including co-Chair, on the International Festival Committee. He also volunteered to help with three Fulbright Gateway orientations. In addition, Waqas assisted with numerous welcome sessions for new international students and served as an ambassador of his country by serving on panels on global topics.
Marissa Sieck – Study Abroad Student of the Year 2012
As an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in International Affairs, Marissa Sieck participated in a wide variety of international activities, including the SIT Study Abroad Program in Nicaragua and the SIT Cultural Identity, Social Justice and Community Development Program in Chile. In Nicaragua, Marissa conducted an independent study project at the Center for Understanding Nature in Nicaragua. In Chile, she conducted original fieldwork research on the role of women in social movements in the region of Aysen in the far south of Chile. Marissa has come to exemplify the core values necessary to be considered a true ‘Global Citizen’.
These award recipients, other former recipients, and many members of the CU-Boulder community have contributed to making CU-Boulder a global leader in education. We hope you nominate someone you know! The deadline is 5 p.m., October 4, 2013.
