Upgrade for wireless network registration in administrative & academic buildings

Register your wireless device

The Office of Information Technology is improving the network registration system on our campus. The next phase will involve deployment on the campus wireless network in academic and administrative buildings on May 15. OIT knows that the campus network, including UCB wireless, is a resource you rely on for accessing a wide variety of university and Internet resources. Keeping the network secure is critical to making sure the network is available and reliable. Network registration is an important part of keeping the network secure.

In the past you may remember registering your computer when you previously connected to the wireless network. Because this is a new system you will need to register again and annually thereafter. The registration process is quick and will take just a few moments.

What you should know about the UCB Wireless network registration upgrade:

  • for each device using the wireless network, you will be prompted to enter your IdentiKey the first time you open a browser window through a device connected to the wireless network on or after May 15.
  • please note that if you have a wireless device with a data plan, you should be particularly mindful of opening a browser to register on or after May 15 so that you can continue to use UCB Wireless to avoid cellular data charges.
  • when you access the wireless network through a secure website (https://...) you won’t initially be prompted to register, so to cause a device to register you should visit an unprotected website (http://…).
  • wireless devices without a browser (such as wireless VOIP phones, game consoles, wireless cameras, or other monitoring devices) should not need to register; however, the IT Service Center (contact information is below) can help manually register these devices if necessary.
  • the registration process requires everyone to agree to the Acceptable Use policy (http://www.colorado.edu/policies/acceptable-use-cu-boulder’s-it-resources)
