University launches free ESL courses for staff

A partnership between the Department of Human Resources and Facilities Management is bringing English as a Second Language (ESL) courses to university staff. The first class wrapped up in April, with ten participants in total, including eight from Facilities Management and two from the UMC. Seventeen participants are enrolled in the current class.

The ongoing eight-week course, which is free and open to all staff, is taught by instructors from the International English Center, part of the Division of Continuing Education. English language learners of all levels are welcome to enroll after completing an initial assessment. Classes are held twice per week for two hours at the UMC.

One of the program’s greater goals is to help staff hone their language skills in order to enroll in preparatory courses for the Graduate Equivalent Degree (GED) via the School of Education’s BUENO Center.
