Stalking Awareness Month

January is National Stalking Awareness Month.

About 6.6 million people are stalked each year in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

  • About half (46 percent) of stalking victims experience at least one unwanted contact per week, and 11 percent of victims are stalked for five years or more.
  • Nearly 3 in 4 stalking victims know their offender in some capacity.
  • Approximately 1 in 4 stalking victims report some form of technology used such as e-mail (83 percent) or instant messaging (35 percent).

Stalking is a serious crime that happens in communities across the country.  Chances are you know someone, or several people, who have gone through the terrifying ordeal of being stalked. Stalkers often know their victims; many are ex-partners or spouses.  Stalking is a dangerous behavior that warrants thorough safety planning.  Educate yourself about the resources available.
