National Work and Family Month: Work-Life benefits

Work-Life programs are designed to supportive of commitments to community, home, and loved ones. The month of October was established as National Work & Family Month (by WorldatWork’s Alliance for Work-Life Progress in 2003. Work-Life programs and services have become an integral part of the University's efforts to help faculty and staff to balance the multiple responsibilities associated with work, academic, and personal life. The Department of Human Resources encourages you to explore the many work-life benefits available to you. 

The CU-Boulder Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) is a free confidential counseling/consulting/referral service designed to provide assistance to faculty and staff for personal or work-related concerns. FSAP offers a variety of work-life programs designed to bring a greater balance to the modern complexities of work and personal life. October work-life workshops include “Getting Ready to Quit (Smoking Cessation)” and “Exploring the Multiple Paths to Well Being and Happiness.” To learn more about these workshops, and explore other programs and resources provided by the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, please visit

Health and Wellness is an important aspect of work-life balance. FSAP’s “Change Your Behavior, Change Your Weight” is an educational support group that helps participants to learn and apply ways to change behavior in support of sustainable weight loss. The 2012 employee engagement survey identified childcare and eldercare as an area of importance to our staff. SelectPlus provides two online platforms, Sittercity and Years Ahead, which connects our employees to a nationwide network of providers providing childcare, eldercare, pet sitting, tutoring, and housekeeping services. The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program also provides childcare, eldercare, caregiving and pet care resources through their work-life resources page. Work-Life balance can also come from utilizing skills and tools to help create a quality, respectful, and efficient work environment. The Office of Organization and Employee Development (OED) offers free skills development seminars to all CU-Boulder faculty and staff. OED provides seminars on topics such as communication, customer service, emotional intelligence, time management, real colors, and generations in the workplace. OED has also partnered with the Ombuds Office to provide engaging trainings including an upcoming training on “Dealing with Conflict Among and Between Direct Reports”. More than 39 million adults living in the United States are without high school credentials. For individuals lacking high school credentials, obtaining a GED can open doors for education, training, jobs, and promotions leading to a greater work-life balance. Organizational & Employee Development (OED) in collaboration with the CU School of Education-BUENO Center provides an on-site General Education Diploma (GED) program and Pre-General Education Diploma for employees.
