Desire2Learn (D2L), CU-Boulder's online learning environment, will be upgraded on Jan. 2, 2013 to a new version that improves usability, offers new functionality, and fixes a number of bugs and other known issues. The new features include a redesigned interface with a less-cluttered layout, simplified navigation bars, easier content creation, enhancements to the quiz tool and a lot more. You can find much more information about the upgrade’s improvements on the Desire2Learn Upgrade page.
As a part of the upgrade, D2L is removing a number of under-used tools. These include User Homepages, Articles, and Journal Tools. If you used any of these tools and would like to archive your existing content, please see the D2L Retired Tools page for instructions on how to store it for future use.
Availability of D2L & Course Data
The upgrade will take place on January 2, and as a consequence D2L will be unavailable for almost the entire day (from 6 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.). You can learn more about the upgrade timing and its impacts at www.colorado.edu/oit/service-alert/d2l-1.2.13. Although this is a major upgrade, it does not involve the migration of data. All data from previous courses will be preserved with the exception of data in the tools that are being retired (User Homepages, Articles, and Journal Tools). D2L is also taking the precaution of backing up all data before the upgrade, so there is no need to wait until after the upgrade to request or start building courses for upcoming semesters.
OIT is ushering in the upgrade to D2L with newly developed documentation and screenshots, workshops to help you get familiarized with the new version, and of course your school or college’s Academic Technology Consultant (ATC) is well versed in the new version of D2L and can help you get up to speed with the changes.
Integration with WebAccess
The D2L upgrade team plans to integrate D2L with the new campus IdentiKey login system, WebAccess, during the upgrade. Stay tuned for more information about this integration. Click here to learn more about WebAccess.
