CU on the Weekend: "Healthy Action and Mindful Awareness for Moms" on Oct. 12

Join Sona Dimidjian, associate professor of psychology and neuroscience, for a discussion about wellness among mothers. Part of CU on the Weekend, “Healthy Action and Mindful Awareness for Moms” is free and open to the public on Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to noon in Benson Earth Sciences, Room 180.

This class will teach you about innovations in psychological therapies for promoting wellness among mothers. As a context for the importance of such self-care, we will learn about the effects of maternal depression and anxiety on a woman’s experience as a parent and on her children and family. The program will then focus on key components of the theory and intervention of two important psychological therapies, which rely heavily on healthy action and mindfulness to improve mood and sustain wellness. We will discuss the latest scientific findings from studies of these approaches – many of which suggest that, even for people who are most vulnerable to depression or anxiety, simple daily practices can be as effective as pharmacological intervention in feeling well and sustaining such wellness over time. The class will be both didactic and experiential, with an emphasis on practicing together to learn how to inform your daily life with specific knowledge and practice designed to support being happy and healthy and the most effective mom you can be.

CU on the Weekend is a series of one-day, Saturday classes that are free and open to the public. Offered by the Office for University Outreach, the classes are led by some of CU-Boulder’s best faculty, and the events allow participants to delve deeper in the faculty member's unique expertise and interests.
