This fall, CU on the Weekend invites community members to journey to the University of Colorado Boulder campus to learn about topics far and wide.
CU on the Weekend is a series of one-day, Saturday classes that are free and open to the public. The classes are led by some of CU-Boulder’s best faculty and the events allow participants to delve deeper in the faculty members’ unique expertise and interest.
The series begins Sept. 28 with “Your Zombie Awaits,” a program that will trace zombies from their early appearances in literature to present fascinations with our inhuman counterparts. Stephen Graham Jones, professor of English and horror genre enthusiast, will lead the program.
On Oct. 12 Sona Dimidjian, associate professor of psychology and neuroscience, will lead “Healthy Action and Mindful Awareness for Moms.” The program will focus on psychological therapies for promoting wellness among mothers and the importance of self-care. Dimidjian is a leading expert on depression in women especially postpartum depression and clinical interventions. These include contemplative practices, such as mindfulness meditation, compassion meditation, and yoga.
The following month, Albert Alhadeff, associate professor of art and art history, will present “Passport to Paris at CU” on Nov. 9. The program offers a rare opportunity to discuss some of the featured work that will be displayed at the Denver Art Museum as part of its highly anticipated Passport to Paris exhibit, which opens Oct. 27.
The fall series will conclude with “How Unconscious Bias Hurts American Health” led by Dayna Matthew, professor of law, on Dec. 7. Matthew will discuss consistent evidence that with few exceptions minorities, women, and the poor receive inferior health care in this country and therefore live sicker and die earlier than whites, and she will discuss policy solutions.
New this year, CU on the Weekend classes will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open 30 minutes before the scheduled start of each program.
