CU Police ask for help in ID’ing suspect in laptop thefts

The University of Colorado Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect believed to be responsible for the theft of eight laptops and other computer equipment.

The following has been reported to CU Police since Sept. 2, 2013:

  • Surveillance video records a man entering the Engineering Center and stealing five laptop computers.
  • Students report the theft of external hard drives, cables, headphones and a laptop computer from the Engineering Center.
  • A victim reports the theft of her laptop and $20 from a desk drawer in the Eaton Lab in the Cristol Chemistry and Biochemistry Building.
  • A victim reports the theft of his laptop from a desk in the Engineering Center.

The suspect is described as a 5-foot-11 black male, with a skinny build and little hair in his early 30s. Surveillance video of the suspect is posted at Anyone with information about these crimes should contact Detective Sgt. Michael Lowry at 303-492-7411.

The Police Department offers the following safety tips:

  • Always keep your office locked when unattended. That includes when leaving for lunch or using the restroom.
  • In common areas, such as academic labs, dining facilities, libraries or the University Memorial Center, never leave laptops, mobile phones or other valuable items unattended. Ensure they are locked up or otherwise secured.
  • Record serial numbers of bikes, desktop computers, laptops, mobile phones and other items that could be stolen. If these items are recovered, it is easier to return them to you. For details on how to register your laptop, see
