This course will examine strategies for dealing with a broad range of social conflicts. At one extreme we will investigate relatively simple disputes which are easily amenable to win-win solutions. At the other extreme we will explore intractable conflicts which continue to stubbornly defy the best currently available conflict resolution techniques. Attention will focus upon social justice conflicts, environmental disputes, international conflicts, and interpersonal disputes. Class discussions will be evenly divided between those that focus upon practical conflict handling skills and those which explore the contributions of sociological theory to the understanding of conflict problems. In conjunction with the course students will be asked to write a detailed analysis of a conflict management effort which interests them. For more information contact the instructors.
