  • General Requirements

Admission is restricted to students who possess a cumulative GPA of 3.3 and have completed all MAPS deficiencies. Students may apply for admission to the concurrent BA/MA program in Comparative Literature and Humanities no later than the end of the second-semester of their junior year. Students entering the program must be able to meet all requirements for the Humanities major and all College of Arts and Sciences requirements by the end of their senior year, and all requirements for the MA in Comparative Literature by the end of their fifth year of study. Students admitted to the concurrent degree program may not pursue a double degree or double major of any other kind and must maintain full-time student status at all times. All students will undergo a mid-program review to be completed by the end of their senior year in order to determine continuing eligibility. In the case that a student does not continue or does not complete the BA/MA program, the BA will be awarded provided that all requirements for this degree have been satisfied.

Credit hour requirements for BA/MA are as follows (students should note that the MA offered through this concurrent degree has two options: a 30 credit coursework only MA and a 36 credit option that includes a 6 credit thesis):

    • For the BA:
60 credit hours in the Humanities Major, including HUMN 1010 and 1020 (12 credit hours), HUMN 2000 (3 credit hours), 15 upper division HUMN credit hours, 18 credit hours in the primary area of concentration and 12 credit hours in the secondary area of concentration.

    • 30 or 36 credits for the MA:
15 credit hours in Comparative Literature, including COML 5000 and COML 5610
9 credit hours in the student’s primary literature
6 credit hours in the student’s secondary literature
Option (for students considering doctoral study): 6 credits thesis

Since there is a permitted 6 credit overlap between the BA and the MA, students will complete either 84 or 90 credits for the BA/MA depending on whether the coursework only or thesis option is chosen.

For more details concerning the fulfillment of coursework at the graduate level, students should consult the Guidelines for the MA in Comparative Literature.

  • Language Requirement

Advanced knowledge of one foreign language and second year competency in a second foreign language is required for the MA in Comparative Literature. Competence in the student’s primary foreign language must be demonstrated by receiving a grade of B or better in a course numbered 4000 or above offered by the corresponding department. Competence in the student’s secondary foreign language may be demonstrated either by successfully completing a translation examination (with a dictionary) administered by a member of the Comparative Literature faculty, by receiving a grade of B or better in a 4th-semester language course offered by the corresponding department, or by receiving a grade of B or better in a foreign language literature course numbered 4000 or above. Further information about the language requirement is given in the Guidelines for the MA in Comparative Literature.

  • Program of Study/Credit Hour Requirements

The following table assumes that the Primary and Secondary areas of concentration in the Humanities Major will be fulfilled by coursework in two foreign literatures. This will enable a student to complete the foreign language requirement within the five year program of study for the BA/MA. The concurrent degree in Humanities and Comparative Literature requires the completion of 84 credit hours (coursework only option) and 90 credit hours (thesis option). Students must also complete 60 undergraduate credits in the College of Arts and Sciences in order to meet the credit hour requirement for the BA.

  • Study Abroad

Students in the 5-year BA/MA Program may obtain credit for study abroad during the junior year.
