Admissions

Graduate Program Admissions

The Comparative Literature Program offers two degrees, the MA and the PhD. Students may apply to either degree program after completing the BA. Students who have completed the MA should apply to the PhD program. All applicants for PhD study should be aware that the Graduate Admissions Committee will make recommendations for admission based on the student’s strength of preparation. Applicants should have a GPA of at least 3.0.

In addition to the following information, students are encouraged to read the guidelines for both the MA and PhD degrees. Both are available on the department’s website:

    MA Guidelines
    PhD Guidelines

Program Requirements for Admission to MA in Comparative Literature

The MA is intended as either a preparation for doctoral study in the field or as a terminal degree in its own right. In addition to an undergraduate major in a relevant field, students applying for admission to the MA program in Comparative Literature should have completed three years of college level study or its equivalent in one foreign language. Students are also encouraged to begin study of a second foreign language before applying.

Program Requirements for Admission to PhD in Comparative Literature

Students are accepted for doctoral study in Comparative Literature directly from the BA or after completion of an MA in Comparative Literature, a national literature, or a related discipline. All students seeking admission to doctoral study must show evidence of advanced knowledge in one foreign language (completion of a fourth year college literature course or its equivalent) and intermediate knowledge of a second foreign language (at least two years of coursework at the college level).

Students in our MA program may apply for admission to the PhD program during their final year of study. All coursework completed for the MA in Comparative Literature at CU-Boulder will be counted towards the completion of course requirements for the PhD. Students should note that admission to the PhD program from the MA program is not automatic.

Three programs of doctoral study are available:

  1. Four Year Program of Study: For students admitted after completion of the MA in Comparative Literature at CU-Boulder.

  2. Five Year Program of Study: For all other students admitted with an MA. Students transferring from another doctoral program will also follow the five year program.

  3. Six Year Program of Study: For students admitted with a BA. This program also offers the award of an en-route MA. To be admitted to this program of study, students must show evidence of strong foreign language accomplishment and aptitude for the discipline during their undergraduate studies.
Students who are unsure whether to apply directly for doctoral study or apply for the MA should contact the Director of Graduate Studies. For additional information please visit the department and the graduate school webpages:
